Even though I love to cook, I know that most people don’t. I will admit, cooking can be messy or time-consuming, but more often than not- I enjoy it. Last month I wrote a blog post about Eating Healthy on a Budget where I said that the top 2 reasons people don’t eat healthy is #1 They say it is too expensive and #2 They say it is too complicated. I cleared up the “healthy eating is too expensive” in my previous blog post. As for the “healthy eating is too complicated” problem… I’m going to clear that up today.
Cooking healthy meals can be very simple and fun if you have the right kitchen tools. I’ve put together a list of 7 of my favorite kitchen tools that are essential for a healthy chef. These products are ones that I 100% can not live without! They make cooking my favorite healthy meals easier and quicker… check them out!
The Paderno Tri-Blade Spiralizer is hands down my favorite kitchen tool. If you are paleo, Whole30, gluten-free, low carb, like veggies, enjoy having fun with your food, or love to eat delicious meals (AKA any/every one).. you need this. Let’s be honest… living without pasta is an awful, sad thought. If you have an allergy or diet that restricts you from eating it… chances are you miss it. The Paderno Tri-Blade Spiralizer is awesome because it allows you to take veggies, and turn them into pasta! You can use zucchini noodles for a pasta replacement in just about any dish you can think of. They are light, fresh, low in carbs and tasty. On top of being healthier for you, veggie noodles are fun to make! If you have little ones they will love to help turn the vegetables in to fun spirals. Check out my Clean Eating Orange Chicken that I always make with Zoodles.
One of my favorite things to cook with is citrus. I use a lot of lemon and lime juice in my dinner recipes, as well as in my smoothies. Squeezing a lemon or lime with your hands is usually tough to do, and doesn’t get all of the juice out. This Lemon Press Manual Juicer Press is so simple to use, and works wonders. All you have to do is slice your citrus in half, pop it in here and squeeze out the juice! A little tip – if you microwave your citrus fruits for about 15-20 seconds (or until they get a little warm) you will get a lot more juice out of them, and they’ll be easier to squeeze.
The Calphalon Easy Grip Apple Slicer is one of the simplest inventions, but it makes snacking so much quicker.. Yes you could obviously just get a knife and slice your apples, but this is much easier. It cuts the apples into even slices. It’s perfect for kids, or for adults, I slice my apple almost all the way through, but leave enough room at the bottom so it stays attached. Then I remove the slicer and wrap the apple in foil to help it keep from going brown. I also have a cheaper version of this without the grips on it but I would recommend this one with the grips.
This Black & Decker Family Size Griddle has been one of the best investments I have made. I used to hate making pancakes because they would stick to the pan, and turn into a nasty mess. This griddle makes cooking pancakes so simple. The griddle is non-stick, so the pancakes slide right off. I like to meal prep big batches of About Time’s Protein Pancake’s (coupon code ‘CLEANEATING’ gets you 25% off). I’ll make about 20 pancakes at a time, wrap them and freeze them. The griddle is also great if you have to make breakfast for multiple people. You can cook pretty much anything on it- pancakes…eggs..bacon. Plus it is super easy to clean.
If you don’t have a crock pot/slow cooker you need to get one… right now. I have had this Hamilton Beach Slow Cooker for years and I use it at least once a week. Rather than slaving over a stove for hours, you can throw whatever you are preparing into the crock pot, set it, and go on with whatever you have to do.. whether it be going to work or running some errands. It is perfect for making just about any meal. I make tons of different chicken dishes in it for meal prepping, soups in the winter time, and I even made brownies in it recently! If you hate wasting time in the kitchen.. you need to get one!
You probably don’t realize you need a food processor until you start cooking something that requires a lot of chopped vegetables. When your hands have started to practically fall off because you have been mincing away.. you’ll wish you had this Black & Decker One-Touch Electric Chopper. In my opinion, a food processor is necessary for any kitchen. The Black & Decker Chopper is a great cheap option, but if you’re looking for something a little more fancy I also have a Cuisinart Mini-Prep Plus Food Processor. Both get the job done just fine 🙂
My last product on my list of kitchen necessities is a food scale. I realize that this might not be a necessity for everyone, but if you are really serious about food prepping and counting macros – you need this. I’ve tried a few other food scales, most of which were cheaply made, and broke after a few uses. My favorite food scale is this Ozeri Pronto Digital Multifunction Kitchen and Food Scale. It makes meal prepping and counting macros very simple.
There you have it! The 7 best kitchen tools for a healthy chef! What are your favorite kitchen tools?
