It’s here. I hate to be the bearer of bad news – but summer is coming to an end my friends.. and fall is practically here knocking at our doors. I don’t know about you, but I feel like it came out of nowhere. Yesterday I was in the grocery store and walked by pumpkin flavored cereals on the shelves. Later on that night, I needed a sweatshirt when was at the beach. What the heck!?? I know that in just a few days, we’ll be in full on apple/pumpkin flavored everything-switch from iced to hot coffee-boots, leggings and scarf mode.
Don’t hate me for saying it.. but I can’t wait for fall. I’m certainly not wishing Summer away, but September and October are my two favorite months. I think New England is most beautiful during this time (if you haven’t taken a drive through the North East while the leaves are changing, you’re seriously missing out!). Even though I love spending weekends by the pool or at the beach, I love being able to put on cozy sweaters and sip on apple cider.
And eat all the fall foods. Have I mentioned that fall food is the best? Mostly because of the apples. In addition to the beautiful foliage, another great thing about New England in the fall is that we have allll the apples (and I really mean it!) There are orchards pretty much in every town. We don’t get a ton of local fruit here in the summer…but come fall, everywhere you look has local apples! I love going apple picking + having fun in the kitchen coming up with new recipes. (Last year these Healthy Apple Cashew Butter Muffins were probably my favorite thing that I baked – SO delish!) Most people don’t realize that you can do a lot more with apples beyond your traditional pie. I always see people putting apples in desserts…but when you add them to savory foods/recipes.. you’ve got the perfect combo. Like in this Apple Jalapeño Chutney. Drool.
I tried this chutney when I was at the Fancy Food Show a few months ago and instantly fell in love. I’m a huge sucker for gourmet chutney, preserves, and spreads, and the flavors that Holmsted Fines makes are down right heavenly! - 16 oz ground turkey
- ½ cup apple, roughly chopped
- ½ small jalapeno, seeds removed + chopped finely
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon Holmsted Fines Apple Jalapeno Chutney
- ¼ cup almond flour
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- In a large bowl, combine all ingredients until thoroughly mixed
- Roll into 1 inch round balls and placed on a greased cookie sheet
- Bake at 400 for 25 minutes or until meatballs are golden brown
I know these are going to be on repeat in our house this fall. These meatballs are hearty enough to keep you full, but light enough to not make you feel icky like some other recipes do. I think you’ll love them!
