I used to be the protein shake queen… no joke. There was a time in college when if you went in my car at any given time you could find a random blender bottle and protein packets thrown in the back seat. At the time I was on a strict macro-based meal plan to reach my goals and commuting to school. While I always brought my own lunch (which was stored in the cooler, also in the back of my car), there is really only so much chicken you can eat – so protein shakes were my go too.
I’d have a shake in the morning after I worked out for a quick breakfast, and sometimes I’d have a second one in the afternoon in between classes. Sometimes I’d sneak protein in my breakfast, like in these Healthy Banana Bread Protein Muffins , or as a snack in Copycat Quest Protein Bars. Then, I’d come home and have dinner only to create some sort of dessert with the protein powder. I was protein OBSESSED. It was a little ridiculous.
After about a year of this routine, I suddenly started to feel like junk. I was getting headaches, always felt bloated no matter what I did, and just in general feeling very sluggish. I couldn’t understand why. I was killing it in my workouts, eating TONS of protein, sleeping well…what could be the problem?! Well.. it turns out it was the protein. After multiple people suggested cutting protein powders out of my diet, I decided to give it a try. Within about a week I felt like a new person! I wasn’t bloated at all and was feeling/looking SO much better. Looking back on it, it’s probably because of the quality of protein I was consuming. I wasn’t drinking high quality products.. they had artificial sweeteners and other funky ingredients, all things I would stay away from now!
After going ‘cold turkey’ on the protein kick, I pretty much hadn’t had protein powder in about two years before finding Vital Proteins. I like to make him post-workout shakes that will fill him up for the morning, so this Hidden Veggie Banana Cacao Protein Shake has pretty much been on repeat non-stop in our house! It tastes just like my old favorite protein shakes.. just minus the artificial sweeteners, and funky preservatives! I like to sneak in lots of spinach and frozen avocado to make it even more nutritious. Here’s the recipe…
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 tablespoon cacao
- 1.5 cups spinach
- 1 cup milk of choice
- 1 scoop Vital Proteins Banana Cinnamon Whey
- ½ a frozen avocado (cut into cubes before freezing!)
- In a blender, combine all ingredients.
- Blend on high for about 30 seconds to create the perfect creamy, delicious smoothie!

While I still mainly get my protein from things like chicken, or raw nuts – having Vital Proteins to rely on is so nice for when I need something quick.
