I know I’m not alone when I say I’m always striving to find new ways to live a little bit healthier. It’s no secret that the health and fitness industry is constantly evolving. We’ve seen the trends in wearable technology,we’re drinking our water and kale-packed smoothies like crazy, and making smarter choices about what we put into our bodies. This year – I’ve decided to take my health and wellness to the next level with essential oils.
A few months ago I stumbled across a picture of essential oils while browsing through photos on Instagram. I was immediately intrigued. I did some research and was super surprised with what I found. Fast forward to today, and I’m now what you’d say to be well on my way through my ‘oily’ journey.
At their most basic definition, essential oils are liquids that are distilled ( by steam or water) from leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots or other elements of a plant. They contain the truest essence of the plant they were derived from. (Aroma Web)
Simple enough! Now what do you do with them, you might ask?
Don’t you feel calmer just reading that sentence? I know I do!
There are thousands of different types of oils, and there are a number of ways to use them. The coolest thing about essential oils is that each one has a very unique purpose and use. There’s pretty much an oil for everything, which I quickly learned when perusing through my Young Living Starter Kit. I’ve already found awesome ways to use them.
Some of the ways I personally use essential oils are: diffusing, inhaling, applying to skin, and taking them internally.
My favorite way to use essential oils is definitely diffusing. In addition to making my room smell amazing, depending on what oil I use, it can be a total mood changer. If I’m looking to relax, I’ll mix some lavender and sandalwood. Every night before bed I mix 5 drops of each in my diffuser and it is so calming.
If I want to feel refreshed – I’ll diffuse some peppermint or lemon. In addition to diffusing, I’ll also inhale these oils for a similar affect. Lately I’ve been turning to peppermint when I feel like I need a little pick-me-up, or to re-focus on something. Essential oils can also be applied directly to the skin. Some oils need to be mixed with a carrier oil (coconut oil, grapeseed oil, etc) because of their strength. Others are safe to use directly on skin. (As with any product – you should always consult with a professional, or test on your own to find what works with you.) As someone with eczema, I’m always looking for relief from my itchy, red skin. I frequently apply Lavender to problem areas, which leaves them feeling less painful, and less itchy.
Last week I was sick with pneumonia, and applied peppermint + eucalyptus oils directly on my chest and throat. It brought a cooling sensation on my achy chest, and inhaling the oils immediately helped to clear out my sinuses.
Moving forward, I’m looking to experiment with different kinds of oils for different purposes. I’ve recently become a distributor for YoungLiving Essential Oils.
