I want to preface this post by saying that I really am not a fan of the word ‘detox’ in any sense. I think it’s over used, and misused in many forms of advertising. I don’t believe we can ‘detox’ our bodies by drinking a shake or taking a pill like many brands claim we can. However, I do believe we can take steps to remove toxic chemicals from our homes. The average home contains 500-1,000 chemicals present at any given time (Source). While many of these chemicals are rendered ‘safe’ by the FDA and tolerable in small does, constant exposure to them can have some pretty adverse affects.
We’re lucky enough to be living at a time when ‘chemical free’ and ‘toxic free’ products are becoming more mainstream and easier to find and use, but now there are so many out there it’s hard to choose which ones to use! We’ve all been there before when you buy something, spend your hard earned $$ on it, get it home and it just doesn’t work. It’s the worst. No need to worry though.. I won’t leave you here asking what are the best natural beauty products?? I’ve tested out some toxic free products and give them the stamp of approval. Test them out your self and you’ll see how easy it is to detox your life!
First up… Toothpaste. You use it every day. You put it in your mouth. Your gums are super absorbent…why would you put anything but good stuff in it?? I tried a few better-for-you toothpastes before finding one that I really liked. Dessert Essence is the brand that I’m currently using. I bought it because it was on sale + had great reviews. (I actually accidentally bought 2) The Earth Paste brand is also pretty good, but definitely has a different taste/texture than toothpaste that you’re probably used to.
Next up.. your beauty routine. I don’t wear a ton of makeup because I’m really not a big fan of it. But when I do wear it, I have some peace of mind knowing that I’m putting good stuff on my skin. I have extremely sensitive skin, and have found that using more natural products has really helped prevent breakouts, rashes or dry skin like many conventional products used to give me. Some of my every day picks are this Sante Coverstick for concealing under my eyes (no matter how much sleep I get those bags are still there!), Mineral Fusion Mascara , Cocokind Brow Balm (keeps your brows in place and makes them look fuller!), and Fatco Cleansing Oil. I love the cleansing oil because it cleans my face without stripping all of the natural oils from it. It’s very gentle and works awesome! You can get this on Lucky Vitamin, or you can order directly on their site and use code CLEANEATING to save 20%. I don’t wash my hair daily, but I have been using this Acure Shampoo when I do wash it and really like it. It leaves my hair very soft!
Now that we’ve cleaned up our mouth and our face… lets talk about cleaning the dishes. I had honestly never thought of using an all natural dish washing detergent until I listened to The Healthy Maven Podcast. One of their guests was talking about detoxing your life and starting with the things you use every day. She mentioned that we eating off our dishes every day, but don’t even think about what we’re using to wash them! So true! During my next Lucky Vitamin order I added these Method Smarty Dish Tabs to my cart. I got this Mrs. Meyers soap at a local grocer, but you can also get it on Lucky Vitamin. They have a lot of different scents.
While we’re on the subject of cleaning.. have you checked out your cleaning products recently? I’ve used standard Lysol and Clorox for years, but noticed that I would get headaches after cleaning the bathroom or scrubbing the kitchen. So far I’ve switched out Clorox wipes for Seventh Generation’s Disinfecting Wipes. I like these for wiping off the counters after I’ve cleaned chicken or cooked raw meat. Their toilet cleaner was also on sale the last time I was placing an order on Lucky Vitamin and we happened to be out of it so I figured I’d give it a try. It worked great, without the harsh chemically smell. We use a generic all purpose ‘green’ cleaner for wiping of our counters every night. One of the first non toxic switches I made was my laundry detergent. As I mentioned before.. I’ve had sensitive skin since I was a baby. Finding a laundry detergent that didn’t irritate my skin has always been a challenge. I’m really loving this Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent. It has no fragrances, dyes or brighteners in it. My clothes still come out super clean, and I’m not itchy! Win win. After reading some articles about how dryer sheets can be harmful to your endocrine system, I decided to stop using them and switch to these Woolzies Dryer Balls. I wish I had done it sooner. In addition to cutting down the drying time needed, these things make my clothes SO soft! I like to add a drop or two of essential oils to them to give my laundry a fresh scent…. Keep reading to see what my favorite ones are!
Another way I’ve started to remove toxins from my life is to ditch the plastic. I found stasher bags on Instagram a few months ago and fell in love! It’s no secret that plastic really isn’t good for us, and if we’re storing/heating our food in it there is a chance that the chemicals in the plastic can leech on to our foods. I love these for storing snacks. In addition to feeling better that my food is safely stored, it also feels good to skip the ziploc bags that just get thrown away. I try to be eco-friendly where I can 🙂 You can order them off of Lucky Vitamin, or order directly on their site and use coupon code CLEANCOUPLE15 to save on the bags
Lastly – cleaning up our air! I started using essential oils a few years ago. For a while, I was buying from some of the super expensive brands (I’m sure you’ve all see my posts about Young Living). While their starter kit was an awesome way to get started in using essential oils, it definitely is pricey. Over the past few years I’ve switched to using almost exclusively NOW Foods essential oils. They’re super affordable, and really high quality. I actually had the privilege of visiting their facility this week, and it was so awesome to see how everything is made (more to come!) It made me love their brand even more. I love diffusing the essential oils throughout my home instead of candles. It gives the air a fresh scent with out the yucky fumes of candles. I also love to use them in homemade natural beauty products and for scenting my laundry in the dryer.
As with all things, I believe in everything in moderation. Would I love to live in a completely toxic free environment? Of course! But we can drive ourselves crazy going to extremes. If you’re reading this and wondering: Where should I start with natural beauty products? My suggestion would be: Start off slow. If you run out of your normal face moisturizer, swap it for a cleaner label. If you need shampoo, try a new brand! Small changes over time can make a big difference! Feel free to message me if you have any questions on this, as I LOVE talking about it!
