One pan, 30 minutes, simple ingredients.. there’s a lot to love about this easy hamburger helper recipe- but you might be wondering.. what’s the difference between store bought and this homemade hamburger helper recipe?
What is the difference between store bought Hamburger Helper and this Homemade Hamburger Helper Recipe?
Homemade hamburger helper is so much better than store bought hamburger helper. Here’s why we love it:
- Way less sodium– 1 cup of cooked hamburger helper has over 1200 mg of sodium. Our homemade hamburger helper has under 400 mg of sodium for a 1.5 cup serving
- No preservatives- Hamburger helper is loaded with preservatives, added colors, and anticaking agents. While these aren’t bad in small quantities, they’re totally unnecessary
- Better for you – Our homemade hamburger helper recipe is made with real ground beef, dry pasta, some spices and cheese – unlike the packaged kind that is made with dried cheese and preservatives
Homemade Hamburger Helper Ingredients
To make healthy homemade hamburger helper you’ll need:
- ButcherBox ground beef
- onions
- rotini pasta
- Worcestershire sauce
- salt, pepper
- chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika
- beef broth, water
- cheddar cheese

ButcherBox’s grass fed, grass finished ground beef is seriously what makes this recipe so great.
Their beef is an 85/15 mix, which is in our opinion- the perfect amount of fat to give recipes flavor!

What kind of pasta is best to use in Homemade Hamburger Helper?
Pretty much any pasta will work in homemade hamburger helper but rotini, penne or medium shells are recommended as cook time is all similar.
We don’t recommend gluten free pasta for this recipe. This recipe is a one pan pasta recipe and gluten free pasta can get very mushy. Use at your own risk!

Tips, Tricks, and Substitutions for Homemade Hamburger Helper
Pasta: For pasta you can use rotini, penne or medium shells (cook time is all similar). We don’t recommend gluten free pasta for this recipe. This recipe is a one pan pasta recipe and gluten free pasta can get very mushy. Use at your own risk!
Ground Beef: We highly recommend using ButcherBox ground beef in this recipe. It tastes like classic hamburger helper. You can use ground turkey in this recipe if you’d like, but we really recommend ground beef! (ButcherBox also has an amazing free-range ground turkey)
Worcestershire sauce: Worcestershire sauce isn’t easy to substitute. If you don’t have it, use 1/2 a tablespoon of soy sauce
Salt: This is a higher sodium recipe. You can cut the amount of salt in half if you’d like and add to taste
Beef Broth: We recommend using homemade bone broth in this recipe but any broth will work. Chicken or vegetable broth/stock can be used interchangeably. We recommend using a low or no salt broth
Cheddar Cheese: You can omit the cheese from this recipe to make it dairy free if you’d like. We haven’t tried this recipe with other types of cheeses. We recommend using a block of cheddar cheese and grating it yourself as pre-shredded cheeses don’t melt as well. If you like super cheesy pasta- check out this Healthy Mac and Cheese!

Really delicious! I used ground turkey because that’s what I had on hand and elbow noodles. Cook time was a little less due to smaller noodles – but my whole family loved it!

This was so good! I’m not even a huge hamburger helper fan, but this is so much better than the box stuff. My husband, who loves boxed hamburger helper, thought this was better too. I was told to make this as often as I felt like making it for him haha. I am also cooking challenged so I had reached out to Liz for some additional clarification and I am so glad that I did. It turned out perfect

I’ve been anxiously awaiting this recipe! My husband loves hamburger helper but I always hated that it was straight from the box with some much extra stuff in it. I was getting a bit nervous while I was making it that he would totally hate it but after the first bite I knew I found a winner. The taste is SO similar if he didn’t see me making it, I’m pretty sure he would have thought it was out of the box. I’m excited to have a healthier alternative for this family favorite.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy you all enjoyed it, Adrianne! Thank you!

Just made the hamburger helper last night and it was a hit! I cook for my grandma, husband, and two kids. We loved it. I substituted the beef for ground turkey, and used vegetable stock instead of beef and it was perfect. Would like to try with the original recipe when I have all the ingredients on hand. Delish!!!

Made this for dinner tonight because I saw all the hype on Instagram. I asked my husband what he thought because he was a huge buyer of Hamburger Helper back in his college days. And he liked it!!!! The only thing was that I slightly overcooked the noodles as I was reducing the liquid. But the taste was ON POINT! I thought it was good and will be making it again – at least for my husband. I will keep exposing my kids as the more exposure, the better! I’m sure they will come to love it some day! 😉
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy your family liked it, Kelly! Thank you so much!
Hayley says
Absolutely delicious! So much flavor and so easy to make! Fed our family of 5 well and even the kids went back for seconds! Served it with some steamed broccoli and it was a yummy, quick to cook dinner that everyone loved! I’ll definitely be making it again!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thanks, Hayley!! So happy your family liked it. Love the addition of the broccoli!
Meg says
Hamburger Helper was a weekly dinner when I was growing up so when I saw how easy this recipe was I had to try to recreate the “healthier” version of the boxed favorite. I know the recipe said not to use gluten free pasta but I broke the rules and tried at my own risk. I used lentil rotini and although it probably wasn’t as good as regular pasta, it was still delicious. I’ll definitely be making this recipe a regular part of my rotation this fall & winter.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy you liked it, Meg! Thank you so much!
Jennifer says
Super quick dish that was easy to throw together. It tasted great, too! Definitely one that I’ll be adding to the rotation especially on those nights I don’t feel like cooking.

Just made this and have to say it’s so good and filling! My fiancé looked at me and said “babe this is really good,” so needless to say it will probably become one of our staples now.
I did use chickpea pasta and ground turkey as substitutions, but followed directions the same.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Love those substitutions! Thanks Abby!
Courtney says
New family favorite! Husband and 5 year old raved about how good it was!

The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it!!
Jess says
Love this recipe! I’ve made it several times and it’s always a hit. The only thing I find that make it even better is using large she’ll pasta instead of the ritoni. The meat and sauce mixed inside the shells and it really brings it together.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you like it, Jess! Thank you!
Monica Maxwell says

I loved the store-bought boxed Hamburger Helper.
However, I have not had the boxed Hamburger Helper for 10 years because it is so unhealthy to eat.
I would try this recipe and it turned out so good. It taste just like the boxed except with no unhealthy ingredients. Also it was so easy to make and took very little time to prepare.
This definitely is a 10
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy you liked it!
ElizabethTaylor says
This was so good and exceeded my expectations! I highly recommend for a super easy family dinner!

This recipe was so easy and delicious! I used chickpea noodles and I personally loved it but family did not. When I cooked it with regular noodles they loved it! We have added this to our meal rotation.
Amanda says
My family of picky eaters love this recipe!! I sub the whole wheat rotini for chickpea rotini.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad everyone enjoyed it!
Mary says
Made this for dinner tonight! It was soo good, my family loved it!
Lindsey Corthell says
I’m planning to make this tonight. Instead of using water, can I use milk to make it creamy? Or is it already creamy as is?
The Clean Eating Couple says
I’ve never tried this so I can’t be sure. I wouldn’t recommend it. The recipe is great as is written without milk (50+ 5 star reviews) so I wouldn’t mess with it. It’s not meant to be a creamy dish
Linda says
?? When do you add the beef broth? It’s not listed. And is the pasta put in uncooked? It doesn’t say.
Thank you,
Linda
The Clean Eating Couple says
Glad you found the answers to your questions. Everything is in Step 3! Hope you enjoyed!
Liz kane says
Finally made this! It was so easy and delicious. So much better than the boxed hamburger helper crap! I did use brown rice penne which needed to cook a little longer so I did add extra broth and it was the perfect texture!
Becca says
my family loved this recipe and gobbled it up first time i made it,, making it again!!
Laura Freeman says
Can you sub the beef for Turkey meat and either use vegetable or chicken broth. Recipe sounds delicious. I will make it with chickpea pasta.
The Clean Eating Couple says
All of our blog posts have a green substitutions section where we outline every ingredient and substitutions for it. Please read it. Ground Beef: You can use ground turkey in this recipe if you’d like, but we really recommend ground beef! Beef Broth: We recommend using homemade bone broth in this recipe but any broth will work. Chicken or vegetable broth/stock can be used interchangeably. We recommend using a low or no salt broth. Pasta: For pasta you can use rotini, penne or medium shells (cook time is all similar). We don’t recommend gluten free pasta for this recipe. This recipe is a one pan pasta recipe and gluten free pasta can get very mushy. Use at your own risk!
Patty says
I would only make this recipe if I added some vegetables to it even if only a couple of cups of frozen peas and maybe a cup of cooked pinto beans (or any other bean) to make it into a healthy family meal. It would still be a super easy family meal.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Patty – This is a perfectly healthy meal as is. Feel free to add in whatever you’d like!
Joy says
delicious and so easy to prepare! Don’t pass this recipe up!
Kay says
I made this today and it is really great recipe. On a scale of 1 -10 i would give it a 7.5
Jessica says
This is the BEST hamburger helper recipe. It seriously tastes identical to the real deal. The only difference is this one is better! My husband and I love it and share it with my parents and sister who also love it! It’s really saying something when my sister who hates hamburger helper loves this stuff. Plus, it’s super easy to make! Thank you so much for this recipe! 🙂
Catie says
This was delicious and easy! I did sub for ground turkey since that is what I had on hand and it turned out great. Thanks for sharing a comforting dish that is healthy and still tasted great! Will definitely be making this again.
Tim L says
I started using this for meal prep during the week but I’ve know made it for countless friends and family who have children and they all rave about it. Especially when I’m making it for them, I always sneak in some chopped broccoli and shredded carrott
Peter says
Perhaps the tastiest hamburger helper recipe I’ve had so far. Loved it. I used 4 cups of broth in lieu of 2 cups broth and 2 cups water. I also added a bag of frozen green beans to get some green food in my roommate’s diet. Really good.
Ellen says
This was so easy and so delicious!!! We used ground Turkey instead and it tasted so good!! Highly recommend making this for an easy week night meal.
Ashley Elson says
The best recipe I have found online. My husband loves it and my TWO YEAR OLD always ask for seconds. This is a weekly meal for us. I follow the recipe to a T and just wow!! I’ve tried with a few different pasta types and I feel rotini actually cooks best with it. To the creator: can I freeze this meal? I would like to make this my new meal I take to friends and family. If so, what would be the oven temp and time?
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked the recipe! This recipe is not made for the oven, so I wouldn’t recommend cooking it in there. Sorry! We have a storage section in every post. It says: We haven’t tried freezing this recipe, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Freezing pasta can lead to a mushy mess!
Diane says
Late to the game on the review considering I’ve made this sooo many times because it’s that delicious! My boyfriend is such a picky eater and he requests this all the time! It’s so easy, so tasty, minimal clean up and so cozy and comforting. You will not regret making this!
Lynne Falcigno says
Love this, 2nd time making! I added xtra tomatoes ( cherry) and some green beans for additional veges!
Julia says
This recipe was easy to make and was so good. Very flavorful and I felt good about serving it to my 2 year old as it didn’t come from a box. I did sub for shells, but only because our local grocery store was out of rotini.
Brittany says
This was soo good, easy to make, and 1 and 4 year old approved!
I made it by the recipe the first time, and added dry ranch dressing/seasoning the second time (yum!!!)
Beth Turini says
This is delicious! Way better than the boxed stuff in my opinion. I followed the recipe exactly as it was written, other than adding a few extra shakes of each spice and a little extra hamburger! Definitely will be in the rotation!
Cassondra says
This is one of my favorite recipes! Not only do I love it, but my kids do as well! 10/10!
Megan says
Delicious dinner! I used ground turkey and chicken broth, which were easy substitutes. Tbh, it doesn’t taste like the boxed hamburger helper I grew up with, but still delicious!!!
Kelly says
Feel so much better about making this for my family vs the box version! Lessened some of the spice amounts because of my kids but turned out great!! Also had to use soy sauce because I didn’t have Worcestershire but again, was great!
Carol English says
After chicken four nights in a row needed a little beef. Made this Hamburger Helper using my Butcher Box ground beef. It was easy and tasty. I’m expecting even more flavor in the leftovers at lunch tomorrow. Recommend this for anyone tired and short on time.
Jonna McCrary says
Super easy, minimal dishes, and delicious! My 2 year old approved of it as well 🙂
Jen says
This came together quickly and was perfect for a week day meal. It was absolutely delicious and kid approved. We’ll definitely be making this one again.
Shannon says
This recipe is great for the whole family!! We have been making it every week and everyone usually has seconds. Try this if you have a picky eater or want to get away from the nasty box stuff. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Penny says
This is so delicious! I haven’t had Hamburger helper for more than 10 years since being diagnosed with Celiac. I used GF pasta and GF Worcestershire and to save a few calories used a heaping spoon of light sour cream instead of cheese. Can’t wait to make again. Yummy
KF says
This is amazing! It’s a family favorite.
Melissa Catron says
This was absolutely delicious, even my husband liked it.
RJ Powell says
My daughter isn’t necessarily the pickiest eater like some kids, which makes me proud, but you can definitely tell when there is a meal that she absolutely loves. This is one of them. I made her a plate and before I could even sit down with mine, she was already halfway through her plate. She finished that plate along with a second and eventually went through for thirds. We are definitely adding this to our collections of regular rotation meals.
Ashley says
This is a staple in our house, even for our pickiest eater. Delicious and so simple with ingredients we usually have on hand. And so easy to make substitutions- I’ve used different pastas, cheeses, beef, turkey. Can’t recommend this enough!
Sydney Sailors says
I am new to cooking, and I recently found the clean eating couple on Instagram. I’ve tried a handful of her recipes, and they’ve all been great. This hamburger helper is my new favorite though. I love how detailed the instructions are and the substitutions she adds as well. This took me no time to make, and I appreciated that after my 8-5 job. This site is so fun to browse when looking for meal ideas. Nicely laid out and lots to choose from!
Thank you!!
Niki says
Hit the easy button for dinner tonight…and made a homemade meal that my family loves! This tastes so much better than Hamburger Helper. THANK YOU!
Teresa says
I haven’t made boxed HH in years. Wish I had this recipe way back when! Kids are all grown now so it’s just me and the hubby and it was a hit tonight! My husband is recently gluten free so I made it with GF rotini (corn & rice flour) and added broccoli florets. I’m finding that the brand of GF pasta I’m using is only good for reheating once, otherwise it gets mushy. We have enough to finish for leftovers tomorrow. Thank you!
Carissa says
I know you said no gluten free pasta, but do you also include chickpea pasta in that no go list?
The Clean Eating Couple says
Unfortunately yes. I find that all gluten free pasta (chickpea, gluten free, grain free, etc) cooks very differently than regular pasta. The water creates a gluey mixture and can lead to slimy, mushy pasta. I would attempt it at your own risk!
Arianna says
I followed this recipe to a T while my baby was in the high chair eating and it was super easy! I magically had all the ingredients in my pantry and added some streamed broccoli at the end. It was DELICIOUS!! It seriously took me about 30 minutes! I can’t wait to make this again!
Priscilla Herrera says
Hands down the only “hamburger helper” I’ll make at home. Not because I’m too good to buy the boxed stuff, but because this recipe is just as easy and tastes wayyy better. I typically just use whatever noodles I have on hand and add peas— they add extra nutrients and brightness. I have a 12 and 8 year old and they lick their bowls clean. We almost never have left overs. Thanks for such a tasty dish!
Allison says
Made this for my family last night and everyone loved it! I subbed the hamburger for ground turkey and it was great. My two year old devoured it and my husband, who isn’t keen on original hamburger helper, was eating it out of the pan. Highly recommend for a weeknight meal!
Valerie says
I made this the other night and my husband and I LOVED IT!!! It didn’t call for a ton of ingredients or cook time which is great for this busy Momma! I will be making again today for our meal prep for the week.
