Tyler’s Tip for the Best Fish Taco Recipe

  • A hot pan and generously seasoned fish is the key to the best fish taco recipe. Preheating a pan with olive oil and getting it nice and hot before adding seasoned cubed fish allows us to get a beautiful brown on the exterior of our fish and build some awesome flavor.

substitutions

Olive Oil: You could use avocado oil, but we really recommend extra virgin olive oil.

Fish: I like to use a firm white fish like halibut for this recipe because it holds its shape well after being seared but feel free to substitute with cod, tilapia, mahi-mahi, or monkfish. Shrimp tacos can be another great option as well. I have used both fresh and frozen fish for this recipe, and they both work well.

Taco Seasoning: Our easy homemade taco seasoning recipe is the perfect spice blend (with cumin and chili powder) for this recipe, but any store bought taco seasoning will work great.

Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice is ideal, but bottled lime juice can work too; lemon juice can be a substitute if you can’t find limes.

Salsa: This easy homemade salsa recipe comes together very quickly, but any store bought salsa can be an easy substitute.

Tortillas: Corn tortillas or whole wheat tortillas work great, flour tortillas or gluten-free tortillas will work also!

Cilantro: Fresh cilantro is optional but we love a pinch of fresh cilantro on top of our tacos!

What to Serve with Easy Healthy Fish Tacos

These fish tacos are versatile, but we love them on tortillas with the avocado salsa below, guacamole, or corn salsa. They are delicious served with lime wedges to squeeze on top, lettuce or a simple cabbage slaw, and a dollop of Greek yogurt (a sour cream alternative) or a drizzle of fish taco sauce on top.

You can also serve them in bowls with cilantro lime rice, salsa, and veggies (I did this for meal prep the other day and it was great!). They’re delicious with any of your favorite taco toppings on top!

Ingredients

For The Fish

For The Salsa

  • 1 cup diced avocado
  • ¾ cup diced cherry tomatoes
  • ¼ cup diced white onion
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • teaspoon black pepper
  • teaspoon garlic powder
  • teaspoon salt

For Serving

  • 8 medium tortillas
  • ¼ cup fresh chopped cilantro

Instructions

  1. In a large sauté pan over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil.
  2. While the pan is heating, evenly coat the fish on all sides with the taco seasoning.
  3. Add the fish to the pan and cook for 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, gently stir the fish and cook for 3 more minutes or until golden brown on all edges and cooked through. Once the fish is just about cooked, add the lime juice to the pan and gently stir the fish until the liquid reduces completely.
  4. While the fish is cooking, prepare the salsa. In a small bowl, add the salsa ingredients and mix until combined. Set aside.
  5. Warm the tortillas in a pan or microwave.
  6. Assemble the tacos. Place a few spoonfuls of the fish in each tortilla and top with salsa and cilantro.

Notes

Halibut is my favorite fish to use in this recipe because it holds together well and has a delicious texture when pan searing. Cod works well too but it is a bit more flakey than the halibut and may fall apart when assembling the tacos.
