If you’ve never made caramelized onions… what exactly are you doing with your life?? (kidding, but not really… cause DAMN they are good!)
As soon as I tried caramelized onions, I fell in love and instantly knew I wanted to create a healthier version.

A little love, some salt, white wine, and some extra time over the stove (you gotta do these low and slow!) led to EPIC Healthy Caramelized Onions!
Why We Love Caramelized Onions
There is a lot to love about this recipe. It’s one of our favorites because it’s:
- Easy to make – This recipe is as easy as sauteing the onions and letting them cook down to become caramelly goodness!
- Versatile – You can serve these on almost anything! Tacos, turkey burgers, on a toasted baguette as a snack… the options are endless!
- Lighter than other recipes – Most recipes for caramelized onions have about a half stick of butter. While butter is delicious, these onions use olive oil for the fat and are just as delicious!

SUBSTITUTIONS FOR CARAMELIZED ONIONS
White Wine: If you don’t have white wine you can skip it.
Onions: The best onions for caramelized onions are sweet, white onions. I haven’t tried this recipe with red onions but wouldn’t recommend it.

How to Use Caramelized Onions
For a fun appetizer, try them on a toasted baguette. We use them in my Sweet Potato Turkey Jalapeno Sliders, I put them with tacos, on Turkey Burgers, and they’re even good in a bowl or on a sandwich with my Healthy Crockpot Pulled Pork.
They are also the star of this Healthy French Onion Soup, French Onion Dip, and French Onion Pasta!
A little bit of these goes a long way. They’re so full of flavor that they make any dish SO much better!
