ingredients

Ingredients for the Best Blueberry Smoothie Recipe on a light grey background: almond milk, frozen blueberries, greek yogurt, vanilla protein powder.

Should you use fresh or frozen blueberries?

You can use fresh or frozen blueberries in this recipe.

Fresh blueberries will result in a looser smoothie while frozen blueberries will result in a thicker smoothie.

Use fresh blueberries if you like a thinner smoothie and frozen berries if you like a thicker smoothie.

If you have an abundance of blueberries, try healthy blueberry crisp!

Substitutions

Fruit– Mixing in some pineapple or strawberries would be delicious in this smoothie. You can also use frozen wild blueberries!

Yogurt– Nonfat greek yogurt is a great way to add protein and richness to smoothies for a low amount of calories. You can substitute with dairy free yogurt or full fat yogurt. You can also skip the greek yogurt, but may need a little bit more milk.

Milk– Any milk will work in this recipe. Almond milk, Dairy milk, or other non dairy milks will all work.

Protein Powder– Protein powder isn’t necessary but it is recommended for this recipe. The added protein will help keep you full, rather than this just being blended fruit (sugar and carbs). Any vanilla protein powder will work. We like this protein powder best.

Frozen Fruit– You can substitute frozen fruit for fresh fruit. Substitute 1:1. Frozen fruit will result in a thicker smoothie. Fresh fruit will result in a thinner smoothie

Other Add Ins– Feel free to add in other nuts, nut butter, or seeds to this recipe. Chia seeds or flax seeds would make a great addition!

Greens– We love to add a handful of spinach or kale to this recipe. You can’t taste it and it’s delicious. You can also try our Green Protein Smoothie.

Frozen Cauliflower: Frozen cauliflower is relatively tasteless and helps thicken smoothies. It’s also a great way to add in sneaky veggies. 1/4 cup cauliflower rice will blend nicely in this recipe.

How To Make A Blueberry Smoothie

  1. Add all your ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth.

Storage

Blueberry smoothies don’t keep very well. You can store in the refrigerator for about an hour, but after that the smoothie will start to separate. It’s best to drink smoothies right after they have been blended.

Best Blender for Smoothies:

Any blender will work for smoothies.

Our favorite small blender is the Nutribullet. It’s under $50 and works amazing! Here’s a link to the one we have.

We also love our Vitamix, but it’s much more expensive. Here’s a link to the one we have.

  1. How is there Trans Fat in this recipe?

    1. Thanks for pointing this out – that was a typo. Just fixed it! There shouldn’t be any trans fat in this recipe, but obviously depending on the exact ingredients you use the nutrition facts may change.
