Simple Strawberry Smoothie Recipe Substitutions
Fruit– Mixing in some blueberries or mango would be delicious in this healthy strawberry smoothie recipe. You could also add a frozen banana for a strawberry banana smoothie.
Yogurt: Nonfat greek yogurt is a great way to add protein and richness to smoothies for a low amount of calories with a perfect creamy texture. You can substitute with dairy free yogurt or full fat yogurt. You can also skip the yogurt but may need a little bit more almond milk. We don’t recommend a flavored yogurt like vanilla yogurt, because it can be loaded with sugar.
Milk: Any milk will work in this recipe. Almond milk, Dairy, coconut milk, or other non dairy milk will all work.
Protein Powder: Protein powder isn’t necessary but it is recommended for this recipe. The added protein will help keep you full, rather than this just being blended fruit (sugar and carbs). Any powder will work. We like this protein best.
Frozen Fruit: You can substitute frozen berries for fresh fruit. Substitute 1:1. Frozen fruit will result in a thicker smoothie. Fresh fruit will result in a thinner smoothie
Other Add Ins: Feel free to add in other nuts or seeds to this recipe. Chia or flax seeds would make a great addition!
Greens: We love to add a handful of spinach or kale to this recipe. You can’t taste it and it’s delicious.
Frozen Cauliflower: Frozen cauliflower is relatively tasteless and helps thicken smoothies. It’s also a great way to add in sneaky veggies. 1/4 cup cauliflower rice will blend nicely in this recipe.
Strawberry Protein Smoothie
This recipe is high in protein as is! If you want to add more protein to your smoothies try adding:
- protein powder
- nonfat greek yogurt
- hemp seeds
What protein goes best in smoothies? I like this vanilla protein powder best in my smoothies! Any powder will work in smoothies, but I think vanilla is the best. You can get whey, vegan or other protein that suit your diet best!

Simple Strawberry Smoothie Add-Ins
This smoothie is delicious as is but here are some other toppings/add ins you can try!
- more berries/ other fruit
- hemp seeds
- chia seeds
- peanut butter or almond butter
- extra protein powder
What to Serve with Fresh Strawberry Smoothie
This smoothie is a great breakfast on its own, but we also love it with:
Storing a Strawberry Yogurt Smoothie
Storing: This smoothie is best enjoyed right after you blend it! You can store it in the refrigerator but it will get separated.
Freezing: You can freeze this recipe in popsicle molds for a treat!
Can I make this strawberry smoothie recipe ahead of time? We don’t recommend making smoothies ahead of time, they can separate and create an odd texture.
Easy Strawberry Smoothie Tips
This recipe is foolproof! But here are some of our best tips for making it:
- Use a high power blender. We like our Nutribullet
- Use frozen strawberries for a thicker smoothie
- Get creative with your mix ins! (our recommendations are above in the green box)
Strawberry Smoothies FAQ
You don’t have to put ice cubes in a smoothie. Adding ice cubes to a smoothie can make it a slushie like texture. I prefer not to add ice cubes to my smoothies because I prefer a creamy texture, but you could if you prefer.
Adding greek yogurt to a smoothie makes the smoothie richer, and creamier, and adds protein.
Any yogurt will work in smoothies. It’s best to use a yogurt that has no added sugar like plain nonfat or full fat greek yogurt.
You can make smoothies with milk or water, either will work! Smoothies with milk are creamier and have a better texture as well as added nutrients and protein.
Yes, you can blend frozen strawberries in a blender! They will break down with no problem.

Absolutely delicious! I added a half of banana and it was scrumptious! I can’t wait to make it again 🙂

I was skeptical but this turned out yummy! I’ve tried making my own before and obviously didn’t have the ratios right. My protein powder made it gritty so I need to try the one you recommend but that didn’t affect the taste. It was the prettiest pink and tasted like strawberries which is actually tough to do when you add in tart greek yogurt. I made it again this morning and is trending to be my go to breakfast smoothie. Delicious!

I made this today and thought it was the perfect ratio of ingredients- so good! I used fresh strawberries but will probably go with frozen next time. It wasn’t quite as cold as I would have liked and I’m thinking the frozen berries will help.
