Substitutions
This smoothie recipe is so versatile. Here are a few different ways that you can customize it.
Strawberry – You can add strawberries to this recipe or make our Strawberry Banana Smoothie recipe.
Greek Yogurt– Nonfat greek yogurt is a great way to add protein and richness to smoothies for a low amount of calories. You can substitute with dairy free greek yogurt or full fat yogurt. You can also skip the greek yogurt, but may need a little bit more milk.
Milk– Any milk will work in this recipe. Almond milk, Dairy, coconut milk, or other non dairy milks will all work.
Protein Powder– This isn’t necessary but it is recommended for this recipe. The added protein will help keep you full, rather than this just being blended fruit (sugar and carbs). Any powder will work. We like this protein powder best.
Frozen Fruit– You can substitute frozen bananas for fresh bananas. Substitute 1:1. If you have extra bananas, these Healthy Banana Pancakes are a great way to use them up!
Other Add Ins– Feel free to add in other nuts or seeds to this recipe. Chia seeds or flax seeds would make a great addition!
Greens– We love to add a handful of spinach or kale to this recipe. You can’t taste it and it’s delicious. You could also try our Green Protein Smoothie.
Frozen Cauliflower: Frozen cauliflower is relatively tasteless and helps thicken banana smoothies. It’s also a great way to add in sneaky veggies. 1/4 cup cauliflower rice will blend nicely in this recipe.
Peanut Butter: Peanut butter is optional, you can omit it from this recipe.
How to make a Banana Smoothie

- Place all ingredients in a blender.

- Blend until smooth.. that’s it!
How to store a Banana and Peanut Butter Smoothie
Banana Smoothies and all smoothies won’t keep for very long in the fridge. You can prepare them the night before and store in the refrigerator, but it’s best to blend and drink fresh. We don’t recommend blending a smoothie and keeping it in the fridge overnight.
Can you make this Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie ahead of time?
We recommend making this smoothie and enjoying it immediately!
Smoothies can separate after they have been blended. It takes less than 5 minutes to make a smoothie!

Best Blender for Smoothies:
Any blender will work for smoothies.
Our favorite blender is the Nutribullet. It’s under $50 and works amazing! Here’s a link to the one we have.
We also love our Vitamix, but it’s much more expensive. Here’s a link to the one we have.
How to Make a Banana Smoothie with Yogurt
What does adding yogurt to a smoothie do? Adding yogurt to a smoothie adds protein, fat, and healthy carbs. It also makes your smoothie rich and creamy. It gives it a great texture!
What can you use instead of yogurt in a smoothie? Yogurt is a great way to add protein and richness to smoothies for a low amount of calories. You can substitute with dairy free yogurt or full fat yogurt. You can also skip the yogurt, but may need a little bit more milk.
Can you replace yogurt with milk in a smoothie? Yes you can replace yogurt with milk in a smoothie. Use half the amount of milk compared to yogurt. The smoothie will not be as thick.
How do you make a smoothie thicker without yogurt? To make a smoothie thicker without yogurt you can add frozen fruit or vegetables. Frozen cauliflower is a great (tasteless!) way to add thickness to a smoothie. You can also add frozen fruit like bananas or pineapple. Decreasing the amount of liquid will also help to thicken your smoothie.
