What you’ll need for Whole30 Chicken Pot Pie Soup
This crockpot chicken pot pie soup is made with pretty simple ingredients.
- My favorite chicken from ButcherBox
- yukon gold potatoes
- carrots, celery, onions
- chicken broth
- salt and pepper
- olive oil
- milk
You can find substitutions for all of these ingredients below in the green shaded substitutions box.

You’ll also need a blender to make this soup. A regular blender works fine or you can use an immersion blender. You can make this soup in the crockpot or instant pot so grab that if you’re using it!
Chicken Pot Pie Soup Slow Cooker Instructions
Making this chicken pot pie soup in the crockpot is really easy.
- Put all your ingredients in the base and cook on low.
- When your soup is done cooking and potatoes are tender, take the large chunks of yukon gold potatoes out and blend them with chicken broth/milk.
- Remove your chicken and shred.
- Add your chicken + blended potato mixture into the pot and stir to combine.

Cutting the yukon gold potatoes in large and small pieces makes it easier to take out the big pieces for blending. The chicken pot pie soup may look a little funny when you first stir it together, but just keep stirring!
Separation is normal when you refrigerate or freeze this chicken pot pie soup, just stir it up and you’ll be fine!
I like to shred the chicken roughly so it’s super hearty and there are big chunks of it like you’d get in a regular chicken pot pie!

How to make Chicken Pot Pie Soup
Healthy Chicken Pot Pie Soup Substitutions
This chicken pot pie soup is SO versatile. Here are some of the ways you can customize it:
Potatoes: We do not recommend making this chicken pot pie soup without the yukon gold potatoes. The potatoes are used to thicken the soup and make it creamy. While other soups use heavy cream or milk to thicken it and make this soup creamy, the blended potatoes give the soup a rich texture and taste while keeping it low calorie, gluten free and dairy free.
Olive Oil: You can substitute melted butter or any oil for olive oil. Avocado or coconut oil would work best. You can also spray your pan with olive oil instead of pouring it in the pot.
Herbs: I love adding 1/2 teaspoon of fresh chopped rosemary or thyme to this soup. It really elevates the flavor!
Almond Milk: You can replace the almond milk with coconut milk to keep the chicken pot pie soup recipe dairy free or substitute regular milk if you’re not dairy free. (1:1) You really can’t taste the almond milk in this recipe though! If you want to add heavy cream.. feel free to do so!
Peas/Corn: Feel free to add 1 cup of frozen peas or corn in once cooked!
Veggies: You can use any vegetables you have on hand in this chicken pot pie soup recipe. More onion, celery, and carrots are always a good idea! I’ve also stirred in chopped spinach or green beans after making this and it’s great!
Vegetarian: Skip the chicken and double up on all the veggies or add in chickpeas for a vegetarian pot pie!
Stovetop/Instant Pot/Slow Cooker: You can make this chicken pot pie soup however you’d like! All instructions are included in the recipe below!
Can the chicken be substituted for a different type of meat? We haven’t tried using other types of meat in this chicken pot pie soup recipe. Chicken breast, boneless skinless chicken thighs, or even chicken tenders can be used in this chicken pot pie soup recipe. You can use leftover chicken or turkey in this pot pie soup as well! We also have a Healthy Turkey Pot Pie Soup or this Leftover Turkey Soup is great too!
Pot Pie: I have not tried baking this in a pot pie shell. I don’t think it would work. Instead try our Healthy Chicken Pot Pie
Weight Watchers Note: The points for this chicken pot pie soup were calculated using almond milk. Points will always vary depending on exact ingredients used. Points used were as follows: Potatoes : 15 Olive Oil: 6: Almond Milk: 1 = 22/4 servings.
Is this healthy chicken pot pie soup dairy free? This chicken pot pie soup is completely dairy free if you use dairy free milk. We like coconut cream or almond milk.

Easy Chicken Pot Pie Soup Tips:
Use cooked chicken to speed up the chicken pot pie soup. Use leftover chicken or grab a rotisserie chicken and shred or use my Crockpot Whole Chicken or Easy Instant Pot Shredded Chicken to make this soup even quicker. If you’re doing this in your instant pot, follow all instructions below. Sub raw chicken for 2-3 cups cooked chicken and only cook on high pressure for 5 minutes.
If you’re doing this in your stovetop, follow all instructions. Sub raw chicken for 2-3 cups cooked chicken and cook for about 20 minutes or until potatoes are cooked.
Microwave your chicken broth: Microwaving your chicken broth and warming it up before adding to the crockpot, instant pot, or on the stove can help speed up cooking time.

Healthy Chicken Pot Pie Soup FAQs
The best way to thicken soup is by adding flour or corn starch. You can make a slurry and stir it in while cooking the soup over low heat. There’s no need to thicken this chicken pot pie soup recipe! The yukon gold potatoes make this soup rich and thick without the need for flours, heavy cream, or other thickening agents!
Yes, you can make this chicken pot pie soup ahead. You can add all ingredients to your slow cooker and cook the next day, or cool completely and reheat when ready to enjoy.
Can I substitute the chicken?
We don’t recommend substituting the chicken in this chicken pot pie soup recipe. You could try making this with ground turkey or ground beef but I don’t think it would taste as good.

Rosalie Dembowski says
My husband and I both LOVED this soup! I am a big fan of creamy soups and since I can’t tolerate dairy, most creamy soups are off limits to me. I was SO happy to see this one was dairy free. Even better, it was just as creamy, if not creamier, than your regular dairy filled soup.We love it and will love it every night we eat it!
The Clean Eating Couple says
I am so glad you enjoyed it, Rosalie!! Thank you so much. If you’re looking for another creamy dairy free soup check out this – it’s equally as delish!!

I love this recipe! Thank you for giving us many different cooking options! I used the stovetop method and doubled the recipe so that I could have it for lunch all week long. I used unsweetened vanilla cashew coconut milk since that is what I had on hand and it was so good! You can’t taste the vanilla. You guys are awesome! Keep up the good work!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thank you so much, LaChelle!! Love that you were able to sub that in 🙂
Meghan says
This was sooo delicious. Even my 2 and 4 year olds gobbled it up, and my 4 year old is a notoriously picky eater. I made it in the crock pot and I added one can of creamed corn which I think added a nice flavor. Will definitely be making this again ASAP!

Annmarie. K says
My husband and I both loved this recipe! Must I add, he’s quite a picky eater too! Lol. But this was just delicious! Way to go on this creation, Liz! Will def be making again! I don’t have a blender at the moment so I hand-mashed the potatoes with a regular ol’ potato masher, wondered if it would still turn out as good, & little did I know, It was finely mashed, & i couldn’t had told a difference! 🙂 worked out great! Cooked it on the stovetop, & I’m going to freeze the leftovers for an easy planned ahead dinner. Just wondering, how long would you say the freezed leftovers will stay good for? Also thank you for all these amazing food recipes! Love your work!
The Clean Eating Couple says
I’m so glad you and your husband enjoyed this, Annmarie! That makes me so happy to hear! Glad it worked with the potato masher. If stored properly it should stay good for 4-6 months in the freezer. You’re so welcome!!
Kristen says
Absolutely LOVED this recipe! Super easy in the Instant Pot after a busy work day. Adding the potato purée at the end made it super creamy without a roux or flour (so much appreciated from someone who has a wheat allergy!!). Hubby devoured it and asked if I could make it again! I added some thyme and sage because I didn’t have parsley…. tasted just like Chicken Pot Pie!!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Kristen! Love the thyme/sage addition – that sounds delicious!

So very good- I look forward to making this again!
Thank you for sharing 🥰
The Clean Eating Couple says
Glad you liked it, Katina! You can never have too much garlic, LOL!
Courtney says
Hi!
I’m making this for the first time — do you think there is a noticeable difference between using unsweetened vanilla almond milk vs coconut milk? also, do you think frozen broccoli would be a good addition or would it change the taste too much? is chopped spinach a better alternative instead? or both, lol!! trying to up the veggies without affecting the taste of the broth too much.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Courtney – I would not use vanilla almond milk. Unsweetened non-dairy milk or regular dairy milk would be fine, but the vanilla might make it taste funny. Chopped veggies would be great! If you’re using frozen broccoli I would thaw it, squeeze out the water and add it at the very end so it doesn’t tun to much. Same goes for the spinach. Would stir it in at the very end!
MTW says
This reply is VERY late, but I made this with coconut milk and frozen broccoli last night. I thawed the frozen broccoli and gave it a rough chop before I stirred it in at the end. Made it in the instant pot. It was quite good!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you liked it!
Kelly says
What a great recipe! Did mine in the Instant Pot and so easy! I used 1% milk and a couple Russett and red skinned potatoes because I didn’t have Yukon golds – very tasty!!! Wish I wouldve blended a little bit more potato for extra thickness but I’m not complaining! Tasty, delicious, easy – adding to my dinner arsenal !
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad to hear you enjoyed it, Kelly! It’s one of our favorite soups. You can always add more potatoes next time if you want it to be thicker!
Barb Braun says
Can you use frozen chicken breasts in the instant pot and Cooke the whole meal? How much additional time would I need?
The Clean Eating Couple says
I never cook frozen chicken in the instant pot or crockpot. It’s a food safety issue because your chicken might not cook and you could get sick so I can’t recommend anything for this. Sorry!
Vicky O. says
Very tasty and pretty simple too. I made a few changes only to use up what I already had and it still came out wonderfully! Since I didn’t have fresh carrots or celery, I substituted those with a blend of frozen veggies (broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, peas). Used almond milk and vegetable broth. Still came out thick and creamy though, and very flavorful too! I look forward to making this again.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Vicky! I’m happy all those substitutions worked for you!
Gabrielle says

Jim Compton says
Made this chicken pot pie soup. It was delish & so easy to make.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Jim!
Martha says
I’m excited to try this! Have you tried it with sweet potatoes in addition to or instead of the Yukon gold?
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Martha- I haven’t tried it with sweet potatoes! They’re not a little more starchy/not as creamy as a yukon gold potato, so I’m not sure how they would hold up!
Carly says
LOVED this soup! Since I’m lactose intolerant, I’m always looking for the perfect, dairy-free creamy soup. The recipe was easy to follow (made on stovetop) and it was delicious! Can’t wait to make it again! 🙂
The Clean Eating Couple says

Jeanne Dubs says
So yummy and quick to make in an Instapot!! It has been saved on my Keeper board!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you enjoyed it, Jeanne! Thanks for sharing!
Cristy says
Do you have any suggestions for swapping out the potatoes? I’m trying to stay away from them, but I know they probably help with thickening the soup (and making it taste so good 🙂
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Cristy – I’m sorry but I don’t. The potatoes help make the soup thick/creamy. Cauliflower might work but I haven’t tried it so I can’t guide you on timing, taste, or result. Good luck!
Ellen says
I LOVE this recipe – it’s my 4th time making it in 2 weeks. One day I ate it for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I add green beans and peas, also use the suggested rosemary and thyme. Otherwise I follow exactly. Today I am going to add some cannellini beans to the potato mixture for added thickening. Fingers crossed!
Steen says
You can try turnips instead. Way lest carbs.

Michelle Wills-Jiron says
What is the conversion in the slow cooker to expedite the cooking time? High for 4hrs? Or high for 2hrs? Would it cook just as well and faster on high temperature?
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Michelle – without testing I’m not sure, although I can confidently say that 2 hours is not enough. It might work for 4-6 hours on high. The main thing is to make sure that the chicken is cooked and potatoes are tender. Good luck! Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
Megan says
My husband and I made this in the instant pot last night and it was delicious! We added a sprig of fresh rosemary, a tsp. turmeric, anaheim peppers, and subbed coconut milk for the coconut cream. We’ll definitely make this again
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Megan! those additions sound awesome!
Judy says
I’m obsessed! I’m lactose sensitive and found this recipe when looking for a dairy-free version of chicken pot pie. Never would have thought to put coconut milk and blend potatoes to make it creamy, but I love that this is so delicious and healthy! I cooked up a big batch for local health professionals working tirelessly to care for patients, and I’m so excited to have enough for my husband and I to enjoy for a few meals too. I posted about this on my social media and so many friends have asked me for the recipe! I can’t wait to make it again.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thank you so much Judy! That was so sweet of you to bring to our health care workers – I’m sure they appreciated this. Thanks for sharing!
Tianna says
Made this soup in the crockpot with so many extra potatoes I had, with a few substitutions based on what I had in the fridge. It came out delish!! Honestly tasted exactly like what you think chicken pot pie soup would taste like, so my husband and I were very impressed! I think I used too much broth because it ended up being a little watery after I blended in the potatoes, but I cooked it down a bit more the next day to eliminate some liquid and it was PERFECT. Thank you Liz!!!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Yay!! So glad you both enjoyed it 🙂
Katie says
What a great idea! I love chicken pot pie but the normal version is not very healthy. Blending and using potatoes as the base is genius. It was so creamy. You don’t miss the heavy cream or crust.
Loved this recipe!! I used less chicken broth, 2% milk, and more veggies. My boyfriend and I both thought this was delicious!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you both liked it, Katie!
Bridget says
I made this soup exactly as is and it is simply delicious! Very easy simply ingredients.
One of my biggest beefs with online recipes is that when you make it it looks nothing like the pictures on the website. This looked exactly like your pictures. Thank you for not faking it!!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thank you so much, Bridget! We don’t ever do anything to our photos/food to make them look different from what they look like in real life so I’m glad you liked them 🙂
Lacey says
This is such a great soup even my picky son like it
The Clean Eating Couple says

Irene M. says
My husband and I love this soup! We’ve been getting a lot of rain and all I craved for was a comforting, warm bowl of soup, that was also healthy of course! This really hit the spot! I love that it’s paleo/whole30 and dairy free. My husband isn’t into coconut flavors – but he couldn’t tell the “cream” was coconut based. I’ll definitely be making this one again and again! Thank you so much Clean Eating Couple 🙂
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked the soup, Irene! Thank you so much!!
Anita says

Oh I want to make this soup, it looks sooo yummy. In your pics I see something sprinkled on top.
What did you use? Thanks for a very nice recipe, can’t wait to try it.

Hi Connie – We just sprinkled some fresh parsley on top for color/photos. Totally not necessarily but it makes it look pretty 😉
Enjoy!

I’ve never tried that Jaycee, and I wouldn’t recommend it as this may be too soupy to fill a pot pie and bake.
Kelsey says
This was so delicious! I ended up using heavy whipping cream & turned out fine. Also added in corn and peas, cooked everything on the stove top and made for an easy weeknight meal!!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Kelsey! Thank you so much!
Brittany says
Really good recipe! I made it in the crockpot and added mushrooms, corn, and peas. My husband loved it! Definitely will make again.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Glad you liked it, Brittany! Thank you so much!
Jess says
Loved it! Made it tonight and the whole family loved it.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Jess!
Rose says
I have not tried this recipe yet. How about chopping up the raw chicken into bite size pieces before adding it to the soup? I
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Rose – I haven’t tried that but I’m sure that would work. I prefer the big chunks of chicken – but I think either way it would work!
Liz Yeager says
Very good and simple to make! I chose the stovetop method. Will definitely be making this again!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Liz!
Emma says
So glad I discovered this recipe for Autumn. So tasty and hearty. Glad I decided to batch cook it and freeze it down.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thank you so much, Emma! It’s the perfect soup to batch cook!
Maria says
Very good and tasty. I added a little thyme and rosemary and it made the difference. Also I used low sodium chicken broth. The rosemary and thyme help with the reduction in salt taste. Yummy.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Yum! Sounds great, Maria! We always recommend using low/no sodium broth in soups. This soup shouldn’t taste salty.
Stephanie says
My whole family enjoyed this recipe!! Even the super picky eaters liked it! Win win for my family!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Stephanie – thank you!!
Nicole says
This soup is delicious! I love this recipe because it doesn’t taste “skimmed” down or super heathy. It’s a must make!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thanks, Nicole! It definitely is meant to taste rich and creamy!
Kelly says
Such a delicious soup!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thanks, Kelly! So glad you like it!
Cori says
Do you think this would be ok with oat milk? We are dairy, coconut, and nut free?
The Clean Eating Couple says
I haven’t tried that, Cori but I think it would work!
Chelsea says
How did the oat milk turn out? We are in the same boat!
The Clean Eating Couple says
any type of milk will work, oat milk does curdle quicker than other non-dairy milks in my experience but it should work!
Susie Robertson says
I just made this, and went back for a 2nd bowl! Delicious, filling, and very comforting for a cool and rainy day!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you enjoyed it, Susie!!
Kelly Deen says
Do I need to peel the potatoes?
The Clean Eating Couple says
Yes, it is noted in the recipe and also in the images 🙂 I wouldn’t recommend leaving the skin on.
Jamie Karges says
I just made this tonight. I never peel carrots or potatoes, and this came out great!
Taylor says
So delicious and very easy to make in the instant pot!!
I will definitely be making this soup again!

So glad you liked the soup, Jessica! Thank you so much!
Jera Flood says
This soup is exactly what it promises to be and more! It is chicken pot pie without the crust; total comfort food 💯! I made this for dinner and it was a BIG hit, used original Ripple milk as my dairy-perfect! I often have soups for breakfast and this will definitely be in regular rotation. Delish!
The Clean Eating Couple says
I’m so glad you liked it!! Thank you!!

The Clean Eating Couple says

Rosy says
We made this last night, and it was delicious! It all fit in our 3 quart instant pot. I added a little bit of sage and thyme. Great recipe!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Rosy! Thank you!
Jenniferr says
Sounds great! My son is allergic to coconut. Can I substitute with milk instead? How much should I use? Thank you!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Jennifer – this is all noted in the substitutions: You can replace the coconut milk with almond milk to keep the recipe dairy free or substitute regular milk if you’re not dairy free. (1:1)
Jessica says
Made this recipe tonight using the almond milk option. Fantastic! Funny how a preassure cooker brings out so much flavor. I did sear, and cook my chicken a bit in a pan on the stove added 3 cups of water to make my own broth. Thank you for the wonderful recipe.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Glad you liked it, Jessica! So happy you enjoyed it!
Lyndsey says
Love this recipe! The soup had a great flavor and I can’t wait to make it again!

This soup was so easy to make, especially with leftover turkey from Thanksgiving. I will for sure make it again. It was so great to have a “creamy” soup without any dairy!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thanks, Becca! so glad you liked it!
Nicole S says
This soup is amazing! I love how creamy it is without extra fat or dairy! So much flavor! I let mine cook in the crockpot. I will definitely make this again!

Christine A says
Super simple! Super yummy! And made with ingredients I typically have on hand!! Can’t wait to try some more recipes!!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy to hear you enjoyed it, Christine! Thank you!
Michelle Dovey says
Can you use coconut milk ? Will that alter the taste too much ?
The Clean Eating Couple says
This is noted in the substitutions section: You can replace the almond milk with coconut milk to keep the recipe dairy free or substitute regular milk if you’re not dairy free. (1:1) You really can’t taste the milk in this recipe though! If you want to add heavy cream.. feel free to do so!
Amberlyn says
This soup is SO creamy, delicious, fast healthy all my 3 boys LOVED it! My bff asked for the recipe! Just make it already!
The Clean Eating Couple says
I’m so glad you liked it, Amberlyn! Thank you!
Amy says
Would like to make this but need larger portion. Have you ever doubled recipe and if so do you change anything like cooking time? Thank you!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Amy – I haven’t tried doubling this but I think it would work. The only thing I would be worried about is if it will fit in your pot/crockpot/instant pot. The cooking time shouldn’t change too much but without trying it I can’t be sure!
Alli says
LOVED how easy this soup was to throw together. It tasted delicious and was just the right amount of creaminess without any dairy. Hubby thought it was great and I also shared the recipe with a friend who tried it and really enjoyed it, too! Will definitely be making this again!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Love hearing this, Ali! Thank you so much!!
Deanna says
Delicious soup! Thank you.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thank you so much, Deanna! So glad you liked it!
Sam says
This was GREAT! I made it in the instant pot with homemade chicken bone broth and the chicken I cooked for the broth. Didn’t add the chicken in unlit the very end since it was already cook. I also added herbs of Providence for extra flavor. The only things I would do different is add another potato for blending to make it thicker and mushrooms. I will make this again soon. Also, I cooked biscuits to dunk in for more of a chicken and dumpling vibe.
The Clean Eating Couple says
That sounds great, Sam! So glad you liked it! You could definitely make those changes if you’d like. We don’t like mushrooms in soup because they can get a funky texture but feel free to add them!
Jenna says
So good! Took out the onion ad garlic due to dietary restrictions and still tasted great. New favorite and very easy.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy you liked it, Jenna! Thank you so much!
Kristin says
Really liked this as a whole30 cold weather soup option. It’s a little bland but I think that’s my taste buds adjusting to good for me food :). I added a little extra salt and pepper and herbs.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Kristin – glad you liked it! Feel free to add more salt/pepper/herbs. We keep our recipes low salt because depending on the broth/other ingredients people use the salt content will vary which alters the taste. It definitely shouldn’t taste bland 🙂
Rachel Morgan says
Could you make it without the potatoes and still get a creamy soup?
The Clean Eating Couple says
You might be able to substitute cauliflower but I haven’t tried it. The potatoes are what make it thick and creamy so I wouldn’t recommend removing them.
Kristi Wolfe says
This is a staple soup for me to have made, especially since it’s colder out. I grew up in PA, and every winter we’d make tons of chicken pot pie (in a big stew pot with homemade square noodles & all). BUT I can’t have the noodles & such now, so I am grateful for this alternative. I add extra garlic & spices, and I started adding fresh grated ginger as well. I also use more chicken & extra potatoes (to put in the blender), and use coconut cream (from a can). SO GOOD!! It freezes great too & reheats well. ! I let it cool, then put it in ziploc bags and let them freeze flat so I can stack them). I’m going to attempt to cook it tonight in my crock pot on high for 3 hours instead of the normal 6 hours on low–i’m a little scared about that, but I don’t want to be up until midnight.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Kristi!! I think 3 hours on high might work (you might need 4, it depends on your crockpot!)
Laura says
Great recipe! Made the stove top version. I opted to cook the chicken separately and added at the end. Also added in some extra seasoning. Thyme is excellent in this and very in keeping with the flavors of a pot pie. Very cozy & hearty and my whole family enjoyed it. Excited to try more recipes from your site! 🙂
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thanks, Laura! So happy you liked it!
nicole says
We love this recipe! we use real milk (whole) but other than that, exactly as you write it! My kids ASK for this meal, so you know it’s good!! Pair with some buttery biscuits…nom nom

The Clean Eating Couple says

Karrie Carroll says
Hello, when you say 1 inch pieces do you mean width? Should vegetables be thinner or thicker?
Thank you, Karrie
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Karrie – please refer to the images above if you need help with cutting the veggies! We include a shot of the veggies all cut so you can see.
Jessica says
Tried this and my fsmily loved this. I pinned it on my Pinterest board and many of my friends and family with sensitivities tried it and loved it as well. I made my own chicken broth out of the cooked chicken. I like to make my own broth as it saves money and is healthier. I have made this several times now and it comes out perfect every time. The cool thing about this recipe is the photos on this site are real and when you make this delicious recipe it looks just as yummy as the ones here.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy you liked it, Jessica! Thank you so much!

That is such a great idea, Kelly!! Totally trying that next time!
Chelsea says
My husband and I try to eat Whole30 for the majority of our diet and this is my go to spot when I need new ideas! This soup is one of our favorite recipes even when we aren’t doing Whole30- it’s so creamy you absolutely can’t tell it doesn’t have dairy in it. 10/10 recommend!

2 tsp pepper is too much…otherwise good
The Clean Eating Couple says

Sarah Housknecht says
I popped on to Instagram this morning looking for soup recipes and this was the first one I saw! I had all the ingredients, so it was a cinch to whip up! I cooked on the stovetop in my Dutch oven which was perfect. Soup was delicious, and hearty. My family loved this warm lunch too which is always helpful! So thankful for a nice dairy free soup option. Next time I will try using my crock pot!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy you all enjoyed it, Sarah! Thank you!
Patty says
Loved this recipe and found it just in time! I had been planning on making chicken pot pie in the crockpot this week but was going to go the standard canned condensed chicken soup route and then stumbled into this recipe and was so excited to have a cleaner/healthier alternative. I tried the crockpot version and it was easy to follow and delicious. It even got two very enthusiastic thumbs up from my 6 year old.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy you enjoyed it, Patty! Thank you so much!

Elizabeth Taylor says
After the first bite, my husband said, “Oh my gosh!! This is delicious!! You have to make this again!”
I made it in my Instant pot and did accidentally let it fully release pressure, but it still turned out great! I also used meat from cooking a whole chicken (also recommend that recipe) and just stirred it in per the recommendation in the blog post. Thanks for such a delicious recipe! Will definitely be making more this fall and winter!
Elizabeth Taylor says
Also, I added a good amount of freshly cracked pepper on top of each bowl and it was phenomenal!

Patricia J Stilwell says
I’ve made this recipe several times and love it — or at least a different version of it. I couldn’t find the original recipe so I came back to your website. but the recipe has changed. It no longer calls for coconut milk (or was it coconut cream?) This is the second recipe I’ve looked up in the last two weeks where the current recipe is different than the one I had previously printed (Lemon Chicken Soup). Why do you change your recipes?
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Patricia – You can use any milk in this recipe. feel free to use coconut milk if you like it. We are always testing our recipes to make them even better, and we found that coconut milk was hard for some people to find – so we wanted to make it clear that they could use ANY milk in the recipe! As for the lemon chicken soup, we simply changed the spices a bit to make it a little bit lower in salt and double checked/updated the cooking times. None of these are major changes. If you want to make the version you have printed out that’s good too. Hope this helps!
Lori says
This was so very good thank you for the recipe. ❤️
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thanks, Lori! I’m so glad you liked it!
Angelika says
This looks amazing. I am going to make it for dinner this week! So simple but going to be so yummy and filling which is just what I need during these colder days and nights!
Jessica Hipskind says
This soup is absolutely delicious! My husband even went back for seconds. I made chicken stock from scratch along with the almond milk and this recipe couldn’t have been more perfect. The potato, almond milk and chicken stock slurry adds just enough creaminess to give the soup a velvety texture. Another key aspect is this recipe only has you cook the carrots, celery and onion for a couple of
minutes or until translucent which gives the soup a bit of crunch. Highly recommend!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy you liked it, Jessica! Thank you so much!
Stephanie says
This is one of the best recipes out there! A true crowd pleaser! So tasty and so easy to make! Thank you for sharing!!
Brittni Scinto says
We love this soup so much that’s it’s become a staple in our house! Love that it’s so easy to make, and that it tastes almost exactly the same as it would if you made the “unhealthy” version of it with all the extra cream and what not. Blending up the potatoes with milk in place of that makes it such a nice consistency!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thank you so much!!
Trudi says
Why do I want to add potato chucks and throw they out ?
The Clean Eating Couple says
You don’t throw them out. Please read the recipe. They get blended up
Laura says
This soup is delicious! I will definitely be making it again very soon!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy you like it!

Absolutely love this recipe, it has become a staple for me! I love it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It’s quick and easy to make in the instant pot and reheats very well. I followed another comment and add 1/2tsp each rosemary and thyme. I’m making it today actually 🙂 Thanks for the great recipe!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thank you so much Allison! So glad you liked it!
Nicole says
Everyone loved it!!! Followed the stove top recipe. When my 11 year old asks for more, you know it’s good!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it!
Ashley says
Can I use russet potatoes instead? Or would that change the flavor too much?
The Clean Eating Couple says
Russet potatoes will work, they’re just a little bit more mealy in texture. Gold potatoes are more creamy
Emily says
It was delicious, easy, and healthy! What more could you want!?
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it, Emily! Thank you so much!

This has been our go to recipe ever since I found it a year ago! My DH asks for it often! Great with his mother’s recipe of baking powder biscuits! I have tried it all 3 ways, and they turn out all great!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thanks, Anita! I’m glad you liked it!
Stephanie says
I love all your recipes and am excited to make this one! Question- do you think dairy-free cream cheese would work in place of a dairy-free milk? Looking at what ingredients I have on hand… I have some of the Kite Hill Cream Cheese- it’s made with Almond Milk! Thoughts? Or is it best to stick with almond milk? I thank you for sharing your recipe and for any guidance! 🙂
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you like the recipes. I’ve never tried that cream cheese and don’t know how it would work, especially with the heat. I’d be worried it would curdle. I would stick with the almond milk and just follow the recipe as is
Stephanie says
Thank you for your reply- this was definitely worth the trip to the grocery store! Delicious!! 😁 After all, recipes are written as they are for a reason!

DawnMarie says
Since we have 15.5 inches of snow already and it’s still snowing, today is a perfect day for this chicken soup. I love this recipe because I prefer a creamy soup so having the potatoes to thicken it up is perfect. A lot of times when I want to make a creamy soup without using cream I put a can of white beans into the blender with some of the broth/stock and then add as much as I want back into the soup. It’s also adding another protein. I make a plantain soup with fresh corn and white beans and that’s how I came up with making it creamy without cream. Now I use the blender beans for any soup.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Great idea! thanks for sharing!
Ashley says
Absolutely delicious and super easy to make! My whole family loved it! Will definitely be adding this into the dinner rotation!
The Clean Eating Couple says
So happy to hear this!
Julie says
Seriously so good and easy to make! I have made this the past couple of weeks as it has been so cold here in Michigan. Even my picky daughter thought it was delicious!! I did use bone broth (I think it gives it a good rich taste) and coconut milk. A definite must try!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Thanks, Julie! Agreed the bone broth makes it sooo much better!
Kathy says
How many quarts does this recipe make?
The Clean Eating Couple says
This makes about 4 2 cup servings. Feel free to do the conversions!
Kat says
Really delicious! I added green beans and was generous with onion and garlic. Also added poultry seasoning and a little Tony Chachere seasoning for kick.
The Clean Eating Couple says
So glad you liked it! We always add a little extra veggies too!
Jen says
how long do I cook in the instant pot if I double or tripe the recipe?
The Clean Eating Couple says
I’ve never doubled or tripled this so I don’t know. I don’t know if it will even fit in your instant pot.
Cindy says
Excellent healthy soup. I added Kale and green beans to mine.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Yum! Great additions!
Arine says
Hi! I’m attempting this recipe today and wanted to ask if I use rotisserie chicken with the crockpot instructions, how long do I cook the chicken? It says 5 min for the instant pot instructions above. Thank you!!
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi- I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking. If you’re using a rotisserie chicken the chicken is fully cooked. So you can follow the instructions in the post 🙂 If you’re doing this in your instant pot, follow all instructions below.
Janet says
Instead of salt and pepper could I substitute Mrs. Dash
The Clean Eating Couple says
I don’t know because I’ve never tried it, sorry! Not sure what the salt content is in Mrs. Dash so I wouldn’t be able to recommend how to substitute. Good luck if you try it!
Brooklyn says
Hi, this looks fantastic and I’m gathering the ingredients to make this weekend in anticipation of an upcoming snow squall. The comments are so helpful and now I might add parsnips, squash, toss in some leftover lentils, and make a jalapeño cornbread. I wonder, though, is it still paleo even with the potatoes? (I’m not paleo but a family member is.)
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Brooklyn – You’ll have to talk to your family member. Potatoes are one of the things that some paleo people eat and some don’t. It’s kindof a grey area. Lentils, however, are definitely not paleo so I wouldn’t add those!
Paige says
This is one of my favorite soups. I have made it many times.
Amanda says
This is my first time doing Whole30 and I could literally eat this soup every single day!! It tastes absolutely amazing. Will definitely be making this again even when I’m not doing whole30!
geri says
This was a hit in my house! Seasoning perfect, very tasty. I opted for the stovetop version and used creamy oatmilk. My daughter who whines about chicken went back for a second bowl. This recipe is a winner!
KG says
Very good. Not sure almond milk mixed too well with broth from soup.
Kim says
Whole family absolutely loved it! All the feels of chicken pot pie without the guilt. We did serve the leftovers in a bread bowl the second night. Sooooo good and easy to make!
Sharon says
Made this many, many, many times this past winter. Definitely a keeper. Super simple. I did substitute basil for thyme, only because I personally like the flavor better. Will keep making.
Jennifer says
Big fan!! Great flavor. I made it in the instant pot, turned out perfect according to directions. Only change I made (which was very good, but the original way I’m sure is just as delish) is used baby potatoes with skins on. I cubed some of them to leave as is… the whole ones I blended as directed. The skins gave it a nice rustic taste. Will be making this one again!
Larry says
Just made this and it is very good. I used rotisserie chicken I had to get used up. I didn’t put the chicken in until the end and worked out great. Loved it.
Karen Ruthman says
I did not care for the flavor of the almond milk. Yes, it was unsweetened but the soup had a slight sweet taste. Overall, this was a good concept and the chicken was perfectly cooked. Next time, I will omit potatoes completely, use large chunks of cauliflower as my thickener, and add frozen peas at the end. Also, I will try with another form of milk, probably whole milk.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Hi Karen – Almond milk doesn’t have a sweet taste unless it is sweetened, so I think something could be off here. I’d double check the ingredients. You can use any milk in this, per the recipe
Amy P says
So very delicious and easy. This is the second recipe we’ve tried and you’re batting 1.000! Very flavorful and easy to make. I made the instant pot version and instead of fresh carrots, onions and celery i added two cans of veggie mix to heat through while I shredded the chicken. Will make this agiain!
Chelsea says
Hi! Curious I saw the nutrition facts- what milk is that based on?
The Clean Eating Couple says
I used skim milk. If you’re strictly counting calories/macros make sure to weigh out your ingredients and track them in something like my fitness pal – these are just an estimate!
Yvonne says
yummy made it for dinner and it was delicious and so easy!!!
Patty Thompson says
Love this recipe. So easy. Great comfort food without the guilt!
Rose says
Which is your favorite way of making this soup and gives the most flavor?
braylin says
Loved it! So easy to make, fairly cheap and every one loved it.
Kasey says
I only have mini gold potatoes- which are hard to peel. Is it ok if I leave the skin on?
The Clean Eating Couple says
I haven’t tried this, but I think it would work.
Penny says
Getting over covid and wanted a chicken soup recipe that was simple. This is delicious and easy to make and takes no time at all to make on top of the stove. Didnt have parsley but it wasnt missed. Still very flavorfull. I used Lactaid milk. Next time I will double the recipe.
Thank you

So delicious and easy to follow. I love that you included the different cooking methods. Was going for a crockpot recipe and found this Chicken Pot Pie soup and made it on the stove top instead. Thank you- I know my family will love it too!
Linda - Skinergize says
My family loved this Chicken Pot Pie Soup! It was so easy to follow and I love that you gave three methods to cook. I found this recipe searching Crockpot recipes, but decided to use the Stove Top instead and it came out perfect. Thank you

My family loved this Chicken Pot Pie Soup. I love that there was no dairy used and the recipe was easy to follow. It was delicious! I found this recipe searching for crockpot recipes and love that you gave three methods of cooking. I used the stove top method and it came out perfect! Thank you
Ken W. says
Fantastic flavor! I honestly didn’t expect it to taste so good, considering the small amount of ingredients, but everything compliments each other and it’s so good! I substituted fresh chicken for left over cooked chicken breast and it was still awesome. 5 stars. This was the first recipe from the clean eating couple, but my wife and I are now going to test out all the recipes done by one. Great recipe, thanks!
Makenzi says
Hello! About to make this! Can you tell me the serving size? I only see the nutrition label but not the portion size for that caloric count. Thank you!
The Clean Eating Couple says
It says it in the nutrition facts- 2 cups!
John Dyer says
Very good!..Added mixed veggies as well…big hit.
Ally says
This recipe was delicious! I added some frozen peas and sautéed mushrooms at the end. When I make it again I will cut down the pepper to 1/4 teaspoon.
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe
Jane says
This is a real comfort soup. Delicious. We’re already looking forward to having it again.
Erika says
Made it without any milk and it turned out GREAT!! First online recipe that hasn’t failed me in months!
Layla Hope says
Hi! Can I cook this on high in a crockpot for 3/4 hours?
Thank you!
The Clean Eating Couple says
I haven’t tried that, it might work but I’m not sure! I prefer cooking things on low in the crockpot.
Julia says
I made this recipe tonight after reading all of the rave reviews. I used the instant pot and found it to be an easy and quick meal for a week night. I followed the main recipe without doing any of the suggestions or substitutions as I find that a good idea when making something for the first time. My family of 4 all thought it was good but seriously lacked flavor. With low-sodium broth and minimal seasoning, it was very, very bland. I’m not sure how nobody else felt the same way. If I make it again, I will increase all of the main seasonings, probably use normal broth, and add the rosemary and thyme as suggested in the options.
Dani says
Hit the spot!
Kate says
I pretty much tripled the recipe and so glad I did. This is going to be a favourite. I used coconut milk as the milk and added corn and some dill. Absolutely delicious!!!
Amy says
So delicious! Thanks for sharing! I added a bit of heavy cream which took it to the next level!
Jodi says
I made this. The Yukon Gold potatoes in my grocery store cost, well, they were the price of gold and had to be purchased in 5-lb bags so I subbed baby reds, which I love and were affordable. I left the skins on. Big difference? Hard to say; I’m no potato connoisseur.
I did not pre-saute the veggies (who has time for that in the morning?). I went with the crock pot version. I used a hearty not-low-sodium chicken broth (Better than Bouillon) and 2% milk. I used a big huge (!) chicken breast.
In the end, it needed more than carrots, celery, and onion, so I added corn and peas. And salt. And pepper. Lots and lots of salt and pepper. This brightened it quite a bit. It was necessary.
At that point, this was good and hearty and tasty enough that I felt like I could send it along w/a friend who needed dinner at work and I was saving from a fast-food run.
I’d make this again and I’d add some cut green beans and maybe increase the spices a tad to give it a bit more oomph. (I might add 1/8 tsp Thyme?)
It’s really quite easy, which I love and it’s perfect comfort food (today was rainy and cold: this hit the spot)
Good recipe. Thanks!
Sasha says
This recipe was absolutely delicious! I couldn’t even tell it was almond milk and my husband had no idea either until I told him! We both loved it! So comforting and warm and cozy! Perfect for a cold winter night dinner. Thank you so much! I will definitely be making this again and again 😋
Kathy says
Delicious! Easy, Added a little Chicken Better Than Bouillon for a little richer taste.
Angela says
5 stars! My whole family including my picky eater ate it all. So good!
Dani says
I made this meal last night and it was a HUGE hit! I opted for an already cooked rotisserie chicken which made the recipe quick and easy. I also used fresh parsley instead of dried and sautéed it with the other vegetables. In addition, I used 6 cups of chicken broth and added almond milk to the blended potatoes. I also baked puff pastry on the side which really elevated it. Going off the recipe on its own, it’s still a 5 star! Very simple, very delicious and provides food for a couple days (depending on size of family). Definitely would recommend this recipe!
Amy says
I absolutely LOVED this soup! It’s so rich and creamy that you’ll never know you’re eating healthy. Honestly, I couldn’t get enough.
Ali Baker says
Love this recipe! Everything you need for a comfort meal in a bowl and not feel guilty about eating it!!! Love it!
Lauren says
Simply delicious and perfect for the fall and winter months.
Genea says
So delicious. I made this on the stove with leftover roasted Turkey and it was Devine! I swapped out the chicken broth for turkey stock I had on hand and all I was missing was a pie crust to make it official! Do yourself a favor and make this soup!!
deezer says
Loved the recipe, even my skeptical husband who insists that any chicken soup must have noodles was a fan! Blending part of the potatoes with the cooking broth worked great as a creamy base! Thank you!
Denise says
Really nice recipe and easy to follow thank you for sharing
Tami says
Made this in a crockpot and it was wonderful! My husband and I both really enjoyed the richness. I did have to add quite a bit more salt which I never add to food so next time I’ll play with some spices. Topped our soup with sliced avocado and it was fabulous!
Julie E says
Easy and tastes fabulous. I added one extra cup of broth but that was the only change I made.
Tasted just like chicken pot pie!
Katie says
Recently DF this has filled the void of my love of Costco chicken pot pie 💜
L Wallis says
You mention substituting chicken for a different meat. But the recipe already calls for chicken, so what exactly is being substituted? I can see perhaps substituting turkey for the chicken, but would beef be appropriate?
The Clean Eating Couple says
We haven’t tried using other types of meat in this chicken pot pie soup recipe. Chicken breast, boneless skinless chicken thighs, or even chicken tenders can be used in this chicken pot pie soup recipe. You can use leftover chicken or turkey in this pot pie soup as well! We also have a Healthy Turkey Pot Pie Soup or this Leftover Turkey Soup is great too!
Jen says
Made this on a stormy afternoon and it was absolutely perfect. I honestly didn’t miss the pastry it was just that good. It was super easy to prepare and came together quickly in the instant pot. Adding this to the dinner rotation.
Carrie says
This soup is incredible! My husband and I wanted to double it, then realized that it wouldn’t all fit in our instant pot, so we made one batch in the instant pot and another on the stovetop simultaneously. Both finished within 10 minutes of each other, then we combined them. I highly recommend this recipe to anyone looking for a simple and delicious meal. We both had seconds. This is definitely going into our rotation of favorites.
Anne-Vonda K says
Have not made it yet but will in the near future. I love the idea of clean eating. I also love that you gave multiple ways to cook it. Currently we are without an oven, microwave or hottub. They are all on the same circuit. Will update when I try it.
Connie Grantz says
Love this soup ❤️
Kassidy Noto says
Easy and delicious! The only change I made was cutting the chicken breast into large chunks so it would be less tough after cooking on the stove.
Jenn O says
This recipe was easy and came out awesome in my instant pot! Really appreciate a hearty soup without any flour or dairy. My picky 11 year old liked it too. I’ll be making it again!
Janette says
Can you freeze this soup?
The Clean Eating Couple says
All of our blog posts have a storage section. Pasting the info here – You can freeze this chicken pot pie soup. Store in airtight containers and allow it to cool completely before freezing.
When ready to eat, defrost the night before in your refrigerator or just pop in a microwave/pan and heat! If stored properly it should stay good for 4-6 months.
Sarah says
This recipe is delicious!!! Everything but the crust and honestly you don’t even miss it! Thank you
Jenna Rose says
Let me tell you my husband and I loved this recipe SO much. He actually asked me to make it twice in one week! I used the crock pot method and it was fabulous. The only thing I did differently was I used regular whole milk because we aren’t dairy free and a regular organic chicken broth. I also didn’t peel the potatoes ( I used the thin skin gold potatoes) to get all the fiber from the skin and it came out just as creamy and smooth! I also threw in some corn at the end because I just love corn in creamy soups like this! It is so healthy and has everything a true meat and potatoes kind of guy needs which is why I think my husband loves it so much! I love it because it’s light and easy to make!
Joni says
I made this and it was easy and delicious!!!!!
Patty S says
I made this numerous times. I couldn’t find my printed recipe so I came back to the website. It looks like the recipe has changed. The original recipe called for coconut milk but this one doesn’t even mention it as an option. Why the change? Also there was never any basil or parsley in the original recipe.
The Clean Eating Couple says
You can use milk, non dairy milk or coconut milk in this recipe, it says that I the substitutions 🙂 I added parsley and basil because I thought it needed more flavor. but feel free to omit it!
Bridget Mahoney says
This is a fantastic recipe. I have made it a couple times now – perfect for my family who cannot tolerate dairy.
Emily says
Simple to prep and make- hearty, flavorful… delicious! This is one of those soups that just makes you feel better after a bowl (or two.) 🙂 I can’t wait for my lunch tomorrow – the leftovers will be calling my name!
Jill D. says
So good and filling!!
Amanda Danielson says
I made this for dinner in the instant pot last night and everyone loved it. No leftovers. I did stir it about a 1/2 cup of heavy cream after it was done just because I needed to use it up. Thanks for another great recipe!
Monica Hubbard says
This recipe for chicken pot pie soup is delicious!!
Moira says
Can I use coconut cream instead of milk?
The Clean Eating Couple says
I dont recommend it but you can! I prefer milk or almond milk
Phyllis Lovelace says
Excellent soup. Cooks at least two times a week. Very filling and tasty. So quick and easy to prepare.
Natalie says
This recipe is a great lower-calorie dinner option! The taste is overall good, but next time I would personally increase the seasoning a bit. The prep takes some time but it’s not bad- I’m not an experienced chef and chopping veggies always takes me a bit but that’s my own issue. 🙂 Otherwise it’s a super easy recipe and I loved that I got it together in the morning and then it only took an additional 5 min or less to finish it up at night.
Sandra says
Quick, easy, and most important- DELICIOUS!!
Followed as written – just used an already cooked chicken ( I had it on hand – just added it in at the end of the cooking ) and added frozen peas at the end of cooking time too.
Christine says
This looks like a fantastic soup..warm and cozy, with a big slice of homemade bread from my bakery would go together very nicely.
I feel the need to post here that i am a thyroid patient and Almond Milk will interfer with Thyroid meds and should not be used..it is posted on the Almond Milk website…
Bryan Roy says
Made it in my stove top turned out very good. I wish I would have doubled the recipe. Added frozen peas once it was cooked. Will definitely make it again
Kristin Sheppard says
This soup is delicious! Quick and easy go to that the whole family loves!
Diane Scomolla says
I have made this recipe many times. This has got to be one of the best soup recipes I have ever made. My family requests for me to make it, and I take it in to work with me and share with my favorite coworkers! I am so happy I found this!!!!
Keena Humphries says
Excellent – it’s delicious! I made it as per your recipe, no variation.
Kelley Fisher says
Perfect! But I used all fresh herbs! Sooo good! Ty for sharing! Just passed onto fam!
B. Gayle says
Such a satisfying soup—delicious, comforting and a crowd pleaser! It doesn’t disappoint.
Cathy Herholdt says
Scrumptious! I used lite coconut milk for the milk alternative and it was delicious. I also added a bit of poultry seasoning because that’s my secret recipe for pot pie. Hearty, comforting, yummy meal!
Christine says
Absolutely delicious! Easy to make and very satisfying!
Irene Coleman says
I haven’t made this yet, but looking forward to it!
Donna says
This is so yummy and filling! I had everything on hand to make it except the celery, but I decided to proceed without it. My new favorite comfort soup! I can’t wait to make it again, this time with the celery.
Phyllis Callahan says
Oh Yummy! I made this last night for my husband and me! It was delicious! Next time, I might add a bit of dried thyme and some frozen green peas just to add a bit more flavor. Can’t wait to eat it again for lunch today after all the flavors have blended together more overnight. I will definitely make this again! So good! And healthy!!
C Mailloux - Brookline NH says
Have made this a few times now and it is a hit and very yummy. I even made it for a work event as it is very quick and easy to make and is a big hit. People love comfort food. So glad i stumbled across it.
Lesley says
We made the stove top version and it is absolutely amazing!!! Thank you for the wonderful recipe.
Katie says
This was a decent recipe, but it was lacking in flavor. Needed to add a bunch of salt at the end. We followed the crockpot instructions and everything cooked well.
Diane says
very tasty but too much pepper.
Steen says
Soup was very good! I added some celery and used fresh herbs instead of dried and added a fresh squeeze of lemon and fresh parsley when served. Yummy!
Just FYI the rosemary isn’t mentioned in the cooking instructions.
Barb Leaf says
Delicious. I have also used sweet potato, rutageba, and sweet corn cut right off the cob. The fresh corn right off the cob gave it a little crunch. If you do use rutabega I would suggest cutting it in smaller pieces since it does take a little longer to soften than the other veggies. My family is not a fan of rutabega (I love it) but they never even realized I put some in there. If you’ve never tried rutabega this is a good way to try it. Every time I make it I do it a little differently. Sometimes I do the potato milk broth step and sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I just add a lot more broth. Nice thing is, it never comes out bad. Great every time. I prefer the stove top method. Great recipe!
Camilla says
Chicken Pot Pie soup is SO DELICIOUS!!
I’m a big soup person. I made it twice in the same week for different occasions! Simple to make, other than the typical chopping all homemade soups require. Served it w/crescent rolls! 😋
Jan Lutz says
On the oxalate lists that I have consulted, potatoes are as bad for me as beets, spinach, rhubarb. Cauliflower is a preferred substitue. I am disappointed that you use potatoes in several of your soup recipes. Could you please list the oxalate level for your recipes along with the nutritional amounts?
The Clean Eating Couple says
Unfortunately that’s not something I can do. That’s a highly specific diet that I don’t know anything about! You’ll need to take your health into your own hands and calculate that if it’s something you’re concerned with. I provide countless substitutions for recipes, and in almost all of them except this one you can simply omit the potatoes. We have over 550 recipes on our website that have no potatoes in them, so there’s nothing to be disappointed about- there are lots of yummy recipes you can make! 🙂
Deb Thompson says
I have made this recipe 3 times since I discovered it and will make it many more I’m sure! I use the stove top version but cook my potatoes and chicken separately and ahead of time. It works well and easier for me. It makes so much and I usually share with others.
Nicole says
This was absolutely amazing! I made a double batch for my family and it was gone all at once, they absolutely devoured it. Most definitely will be making this again and again!!
suzi says
I can spot a really good recipe and this one was todays!! Made a double batch for us (vegan family) and subbed soy curls for chicken. Used homemade almond milk and followed the rest. Absolutely delish! Oh I did do half the potatoes and a bit extra broth for a lighter warm weather version. Absolutely delicious!!!! Thanks for this one!!
Becky says
This is delicious and super easy to make!! It’s a like a warm hug after a hard day’s work!
Bree says
Question … I know potatoes were used to add a thickening agent but keeping it healthy and gluten-free, buuuuuuut … I hate potatoes. I have texture issues with them — cannot stand the fine grainy texture of potatoes or beans. Is that noticeable in this recipe? I love the idea of a healthier pot pie, but dubious of the potato aspect 🙁
The Clean Eating Couple says
I’m sorry but they’re such an important part of the recipe that I’ve never tried making it without them. I really have no clue how it would taste! I would use yukon gold potatoes per the recommendations in the post because they’re less grainy/much more creamy!
Josh Sheffield says
I simply use the instant potato mixes which now have all sorts of herbs and seasonings!
Just don’t use too much. Add only a little at a time. The mix will thicken once it feels the heat!
The Clean Eating Couple says
I wouldn’t recommend this, try at your own risk!
Rachel says
The flavor of the soup doesn’t quite make up for the lack of tradition pot pie with the crust. It was just ok. I had higher expectations.
Michelle says
Easy instructions and nutritional.
Esther says
So so tasty, my whole family liked it ! Definitely saving to my Pinterest !
Christina H. says
Hands down this was easily a 10/10. This is definitely going down as a regular on my menu. I cooked mine in the crock pot.
Tracey Hooper says
Absolutely delicious. Tastiest soup I’ve ever made.
Kim says
East and delicious! I made mine on the stove top with leftover rotisserie chicken , skim milk and potato flakes (leftover from another recipe as well) for the quartered potato. With the potato flakes the consistency was perfect, ready a bit sooner with fewer dishes. WIN,WIN,WIN……THANK YOU
Angela says
One of the best soups we have ever made. This has now become a staple in our rotation.
Elizabeth Crespo says
This soup is superb!! I’m Hispanic and love my food well seasoned. The season in this soup is on point. I will keep this recipe to make once a week!
April Stephens says
I needed something to make tonight to use up fridge veggies before vacation. This is perfect. Thank you.
Michelle says
My daughter is very excited to try this recipe as she loves Pot Pie. We are
going to do it together. We went to the sore today and bought most of the stuff
but forgot the carrotts and celery. I am going to use one can of carrotts instead
of cutting the carrotts it is a fairly simple recipe on the stove and i am excited
to see what happens.
Jennifer Rogers says
I made this yesterday, it was so easy to make and SO DELISH!! It will definitely be in our food rotation!
BMPMD says
Looks amazing!
Moses says
I’ve never had a chicken pot pie in my life that didn’t have peas, so I wouldn’t consider that to be an optional ingredient for a soup with that particular name. That should be part of the foundation. If you don’t like peas, then you don’t like chicken pot pie.
The Clean Eating Couple says
Relax… if you want to add peas feel free.. no one said you can’t!
Erin Stephenson says
Just made it delicious feel like Jamie Oliver thankyou very much xmwahx
Grace says
Added in some more seasoning and vegetables but followed the instructions for stovetop and it came out amazing! Only thing was my cook time. It finished in about 20 minutes compared to 30.
Brenda says
Delish! I used the top stove method. Love that I didn’t have to cook the chicken first!
Flakstad Solveig says
I would like to try this soup.
Heather Marshburn says
Great soup! I followed the recipe as stated excerpt I didn’t have any rosemary, and I added 1/4 tsp sage. I also threw in some cabbage and kolrahbi I wanted to use up. I would make this again!
Kathy says
Great recipe! I made it almost exactly as recipe called for…stove top.
Jolene Van Rooyen says
Looking very tasty!
Cynthia says
I made this soup on stovetop, it came out perfect and took no time at all. I used whole milk. I don’t regret doubling the recipe as it becomes even tastier each day.
Alysyn Williams says
This was really, really wonderful! We added a little garlic salt after tasting it, but as with all things, that is personal preference. This soup will be a staple in our home now! 🙂
Hunter says
First time making this recipe tonight (stove top) – AMAZING! Super easy. I couldn’t find Yukon potatoes so I used 2c small yellow potatoes and 1 russet potato. I’m not sure how this can be cooked in 30min, took a bit over an hour at med-lo for the carrots and celery to soften and chicken to be thoroughly cooked and not rubbery. But it was worth the extra time, it’ll definitely go into my regular soup lineup!
Susie says
If you cook both potatoes together. Won’t the small ones be smashed by the time the big ones are done?
The Clean Eating Couple says
I haven’t had that problem!
Teri says
Excellent! Followed the recipe using rotisserie chicken. I will make this one again.
Tammy Schinhofen says
I tried this recipe because I love soup and the ingredients used too. I couldn’t believe how quick and easy this was to make. I loved that I was given 3 options of cooking methods. I do so like to tweak recipes for my own tastes which I did, but not by much. I find that recipes never have enough seasoning for my tastes so I usually double the amount. This chicken recipe allows for using a store bought rotisserie chicken which certainly helps with time management. I used less potato and more cauliflower that I oven roasted before adding it. I needed more celery, carrots, onion,as I didn’t have enough on hand. I used four cups of chicken broth and one half to one cup heavy cream. I like my soups a bit brothy. I don’t have an immersion blender so I used a regular blender and puréed about 4 cups of soup to add back in for thickening. I absolutely love this recipe and will be making it again. Hope you try it, I wasn’t disappointed.
Sheila Bakken says
This soup is amazing!! I made it exactly as instructed and the soup turned out great!! So easy to make! I made mine in my pressure cooker. Chicken was juicy and the veggies were just right. I used my hand mixer to shred the chicken. It was way faster than using my fork.
Whitney Amann says
I cannot wait to try this. It looks amazing. I was just wondering is the coconut milk used from a can or from a carton that is refrigerated? Thank you for your help. 😃
The Clean Eating Couple says
Either pne will work! Just make sure it’s not sweetened. almond or regular milk will also work.
Kat Jevnaker-Paananen says
You mjention that yukon potatos keep the soup dairy free yet you add milk?
The Clean Eating Couple says
the recipe says to use milk of choice. you can use regular or non dairy.
Maria LaRue says
I tried this recipe for my family. They loved it. It was delicious. Easy to make definitely healthy light meal. Very tasty.
Sheila Pierce says
This soup was great. I really loved using the potatoes to thicken the soup. Worked out perfectly. Thanks for the recipe.
Karlyn says
Super easy and turned out just as expected! Only thing I will change for next time is adding more spices and more salt/pepper especially, as it is a little bland but definitely comforting and delicious nonetheless. Adding into my regular rotation and writing up a nice recipe card for this one!
Ginette says
Loved it. Thanks
Dee says
This soup was delicious. Everyone loved. Will definitely be making it again soon!!👍
Danielle says
So so delicious yet healthy! Have made this recipe multiple times and never fails. My only suggestion would be to add the smaller cubed potatoes in about 5 minutes after the rest of the ingredients to avoid them falling apart, but so good either way. Going to try with corn next time! Yum
Kelly says
I made this tonight and it was delicious! My husband loves lots of meat so I used two huge chicken breasts that were probably 2+ lbs total (total pack of 4 breasts was 4 lbs). I did heaping cup fulls of the veggies and 1/2 tsp of the spices/seasonings instead of 1/4. 3 1/2 cups of low sodium chicken broth (just about a whole carton) and it turned out so great!!!
Teri-Lynn Steeves says
Great comfort food
kristin says
Excellent recipe with low FODMAP ingredients! I used oat milk and a Costco rotisserie chicken. The one thing that was difficult with the recipe was the potato measurements ( how many potatoes is one cup quartered because obviously it is not going to measure well in a measuring cup), but it was easy to figure out looking at the pictures. Thanks!
Gina Bryant says
I made this soup earlier in the week and it was fantastic and so easy to make!! It will be on the rotation…added bonus is that it is macro friendly!!
Denise says
Delicious and easy! Made in the crockpot. Perfect flavor combination. Made small changes. Added 4 cups chicken broth and heaping tsp of Better than Boullion, chicken flavor. I like the depth of flavor of the extra bouillon. Added a few more veggies since increasing the broth by one cup. Cut all the potatoes in one-inch pieces. Before serving, removed the chicken and used a stick blender to pulverize a little bit of soup. Yum!!!! Thank you!
Priscilla Brown says
This is soooo good, made it with both Instant Pot and Slow Cooker and both turned out fantastic! Very flavorful and has that good old fashioned home made soup taste like my grandmother used to make. The whole family loves it and gobbles it up, will have to start making double batches!
Erika says
Loved this! Used mini yellow potatoes that I didn’t have to peel. But some up and left some whole for blending. Also added red pepper flakes. It was a family hit!
Patricia says
Please, how can I print out the recipe in a compact form? My printer wants to print out 19 sheets!!
The Clean Eating Couple says
You need to click the print recipe button in the recipe box, not print from your internet browser
Sandy says
I made this in the Instant pot and while it was easy, it reinforced my opinion that any kind of stew with potatoes and meat just does not work well in the pressure cooker. What I love about the instant pot is the way meat gets so tender. This did not happen in this recipe with the short cooking time, my chicken was tough (cooked from raw) while my potatoes fell apart. Maybe this would have been good with rotisserie chicken and a slightly shorter cook time. Or maybe this would be better on the stove, cooking the chicken first and then adding the vegetables, and finally the potato. Otherwise this was pretty tasty, although I needed to add quite a lot of salt (I used low-sodium broth.)
Michelle Shepherd says
I make this all the time, it’s my fav and everyone loves it. The only thing I add is a table spoon of better than bouillon just for a touch extra flavour.
