Healthy Thanksgiving FAQ
Let’s be real, Thanksgiving is typically not the day for many to ‘eat healthy’ but there are a few ways you can clean up the day if you’re watching what you eat! Opt for turkey breast (lowest in fat, highest in protein), make sure to have veggies on you plate, and enjoy everything in moderation! It’s only one day!
If I were hosting Thanksgiving, I would make something from every category on this page 🙂 An appetizer, a main dish (Turkey!), a few sides and a few desserts!
My favorite thing to bring to a potluck are these Paleo Maple Whipped Sweet Potatoes because they reheat very well. These Healthy Apple Crumble Bars are also good to bring because they don’t need to be refrigerated.
There are lots of options besides turkey on Thanksgiving! Make a whole chicken or even keep it vegetarian with making different fall soups like butternut squash soup or potato soup! These Stuffed Acorn Squash also make for a great holiday meal!
Healthy Thanksgiving Recipe: Crockpot Turkey Breast
- 2 celery stalks halved
- 2 carrots halved
- 3 lb boneless turkey breast
- 1.5 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 cup water or vegetable stock
- 1 cup broth from the bottom of the crockpot base
- 2 tablespoons flour
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- pinch of pepper
- Layer carrots and celery in the base of your crockpot. Place the turkey breast on top of the vegetables.
- Mix together olive oil and spices. Brush the outside of the turkey breast with oil/spice mixture.
- Add in 1 cup of stock or water to the bottom of the crockpot, cover and set to cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours. Low is recommended.
- You can transfer the turkey to a glass baking dish and broil to make the skin crispy for 4-5 minutes, or serve directly from the crockpot!
- Optional Gravy: Take 1 cup of broth from the base of the crockpot and add it to a small sauce pot. Bring to a boil, whisking in flour and spices. Reduce heat and simmer. It should thicken almost immediately.
